The UE community condoles with the family and loved ones of UE graduate and former UE Alumni Association Inc. (UEAAI) President Commodore Renato S. Chan (PCRGA), who passed away due to illness on December 19, 2017. He was 73 years old.
A native of Baguio City, Commo. Chan earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the UE College of Business Administration-Manila in 1965.
Commo. Chan took up military duty with the AFP Reserve Command (AFPRESCOM) in July 1986. He took up a General Staff course in the AFP Command Staff General College. A military reservist, Commo. Chan was promoted to Major in 1985 and to Lieutenant Colonel in 2001. In 2011, he was promoted to Commodore of the Philippine Coastal and River Guards Agroupation (PCRGA).
He was awarded the Military Commendation Medal thrice for dedication to duty as a reservist in 1988, 1989 and 1998; the Military Merit Medal for the meritorious performance of his duties in 1988 and 1994; and the Reserve Lapu-lapu (Katapatan) Badge in 2001 for the services he rendered as a reserve officer of the AFP. He retired from the reserve forces in 2006.
Even while embarking on a career as a military reservist, he served in various private companies, such as Pepsi Cola Inc., Coca-Cola Inc. and Zuellig Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Since 2000, he was the Vice President for Administration and Logistics and General Manager of Sinofil and Triad Security.
A loyal UE alumnus, Commo. Chan was an active member of the UEAAI. He sat as its President from 2010 to 2012, and was the UEAAI’s Business Manager at the time of his demise. Commo. Chan was also active with the UE Knights Inc. He was its Secretary-General as of his passing.
A widower, he is survived by his children, Adriaen, Roderick and Renato Jr.
The wake for Commo. Chan was held in the Chan family home in J. M. Basa St., Calumpang, Marikina City. His remains were cremated on December 24, 2017.
