UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (CFAD) professor and filmmaker Richard Soriano Legaspi was one of the honorees of the second Film Ambassadors’ Night of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) on February 9, 2018, at the Sampaguita Gardens in New Manila, Quezon City.
The Film Ambassadors’ Night honors and recognizes recent international film festival winners and other achievers in the field of cinema. Prof. Legaspi was honored for his film Pipo, which won the Viewer’s Choice Award in the Asian and Middle Eastern Film Night of the fifth Gatffest Film Festival in Kingston, Jamaica. Prof. Legaspi’s 20-minute film tells the story of Pipo, a boy who wants nothing else but to have his family picture taken.
Prof. Legaspi is a 2000 graduate of Bachelor of Fine Arts, major in Advertising Arts of the then UE College of Fine Arts in UE Caloocan, where he also has been teaching. He is a graduate of the 14th batch of renowned scriptwriter Ricky Lee’s workshop, and is a fellow of the Asian Film Academy in Busan, South Korea, where he trained under renowned Asian filmmakers Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Pen-Ek Ratanaruang. He was a recipient of the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature in 2012 for his screenplay Primera Bella. He was also selected as one of the UNESCO-Aschberg Laureate Artists of 2013, a scholarship program that offers residencies to artists worldwide. He took his residency in the UNIDEE (University of Ideas) Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella, Italy.
He has 14 films under his belt, the latest of which is Pipo, released in 2015. His 2007 film Ambulancia earned the Miglior Montaggio Award at the San Gio Film Festival and was a Dubai International Film Festival. His first full-length film Paano Ko Sasabihin? which starred Erich Gonzales and Enchong Dee, won the Special Jury Prize, the Audience Award and the Best Editing award at the 2009 Cinema One Originals and was a finalist in the at the Babel Film Festival in Italy. His 2011 short film Manenaya won the Jury Prize in that year’s Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and was the opening film at the 2012 Asiatica Film Mediale in Rome, Italy.
