Recent UE Caloocan graduates May Angelou M. Estacio (left) and Marisa Barrera (right) are finalists of the 2018 GMA Network Excellence Awards. Both earned their respective degrees at UE’s 70th Yearend Commencement Rites earlier this year.
The award is open to graduates of Communications and Technology courses who exhibit excellence through leadership, academic performance and social responsibility. The television network confers two excellence awards: one for the best communications graduate, and another for the outstanding graduate of a technology-based course. Ms. Barrera and Ms. Estacio were formally recognized as finalists on August 10, 2018, at the GMA Network Center in Quezon City.

Ms. Barrera is among the top five finalists in the Communication Category. She had been a University Scholar and a University President Scholar during her stay in UE. She also had the highest average among UE CAS Caloocan’s May 2018 graduates.
Ms. Barrera served as the UE Caloocan Central Student Council President in SY 2017-2018. She also was the Secretary of the Rotaract Club of UE Caloocan, and the Publications Head of the Lualhati League of Scholars in SY 2015-2016. Last May 3, 2018, she became the fourth UE and UE Caloocan graduate to receive the Fernando Poe Jr. Excellence Award.
As finalists, Ms. Barrera and Ms. Estacio were rewarded with certificates and cheque prizes.
From numerous submissions and nominations nationwide, the GMA network’s selection committee narrowed down the finalists to five individuals per category. These finalists underwent an interview with a panel that included GMA executives, journalist Howie Severino, and actors Rocco Nacino and Benjamin Alves, and actor and Yes Pinoy Foundation’s Founding Chairman Dingdong Dantes.
This is not the first time that UE graduates became finalists in the network’s excellence awards race. Last year, John Resty B. Santos, an AB Communication graduate, Magna Cum Laude, of UE CAS Caloocan and SY 2016-2017’s Outstanding Graduate Awardee, was one of the five finalists in the Communication Category.
Congratulations, Warrior Achievers!
