The University of the East congratulates UE College of Business Administration (CBA)-Manila graduate Lorena Magsombol Carpina, CPA, for being the only Filipina among the 57 recipients of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ (AICPA) Elijah Watt Sells Award for 2021!
The award is given to US CPA exam candidates who obtain a cumulative average score of above 95.50 across all four sections of the US Uniform CPA examination, pass all four sections on their first attempt, and complete testing within 2021. Of the whopping 72,000 who took the US CPA Exam for 2021, only 57 candidates, including Ms. Carpina, met the criteria to receive the award.
Ms. Carpina is a UE graduate twice over. She graduated from the UE Elementary and Secondary Laboratory Schools-Manila (now the UE Basic Education Department-Manila) in 2007 as the batch Salutatorian. She received her Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and Computer-based Accounting Systems degree, Magna Cum Laude, from the UE CBA Manila at the University’s 64th Yearend Commencement Rites on April 25, 2012, at the PICC Plenary Hall.
As a UE college student, Ms. Carpina had been a University President Scholar, University Scholar and College Scholar. She was also a consistent Academic Excellence Awardee. Furthermore, she served as the Vice President for Audit of the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants-UE Manila Chapter for SY 2011-2012, and was a member of the Business Administration Mathematics Society for SY 2010-2011. After her graduation from UE, Ms. Carpina took and passed the October 2012 Philippine CPA Licensure Examination.
She worked as an Audit Staffer at Punongbayan & Araullo, one of the leading accounting firms in the country and a member firm of Grant Thornton International Limited. She rose from the ranks, was promoted to Audit Senior and concluded her P&A stint as an Audit Manager in December 2017.
In January 2018, she worked at KPMG Lower Gulf Limited in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
In May 2019, Ms. Carpina transferred to Grant Thornton LLP New York City, USA, and progressed to Audit Senior III in 2021. Currently, she is working at Grant Thornton’s Metropark Office in Iselin, New Jersey. Moreover, she took and passed the US Uniform CPA Examination and has active licenses for both the US states of New York and New Jersey.
AICPA sets ethical standards for its members and US auditing standards for private companies, not-for-profit organizations, and federal, state and local governments. It also develops and grades the Uniform CPA Examination and builds the pipeline of future talent for the public accounting profession.
The Elijah Watt Sells Award was established by AICPA in 1923 to recognize outstanding performances in the US CPA exam.
