The University of the East congratulates the participating two-person team of Bachelor of Science of Accountancy (BSA) students of the UE College of Business Administration (CBA)-Manila, for earning 3rd Place at a recent international online accounting debate competition!
Hosted by the Student Association of Accounting under the Faculty of Economics and Business, State University of Surabaya, Indonesia, the competition was held last November 12 to 13, 2022, via Zoom.
The UE CBA Manila team of 4th-year student Racky Marson Escueta and 1st-year student Kathleen Zetha Aquino was the lone Philippine and foreign team that competed against 19 Indonesian teams from 13 different Indonesian universities in the two-day debate competition, whose theme was “Financial Technology in Countries as Strengthening Fiscal Resilience and Anticipating a Transformed Economy Due to Changes in Future Eras.” The event was aimed at fostering relationships between ASEAN countries.
The competition followed the modified British Parliamentary debate format and used a point system in determining the scores of each team. In each match, debate teams were divided into two sides, Government and Opposition, and then subdivided into four positions: Opening Government, Opening Opposition, Closing Government, and Closing Opposition. The contestant-speakers were given approximately seven minutes to defend their respective sides, after which the adjudicators tallied the points garnered by each team based on the substance of content, manner of speech, and overall methodology. The teams were then ranked according to the total points they garnered.
The elimination round consisted of two matches for all the teams before being ranked as to which team will advance to the quarterfinals. In this elimination round, our Warrior Debaters ranked second out of 16 advancing teams and was one of the highest-ranking teams. In addition, Ms. Aquino was nominated as one of the top five best speakers. From the 20 teams, 16 were selected to advance to the semi-final round that took place on Sunday, November 13.
The final round consisted of four teams, namely the Warrior Students of UE CBA Manila, Cyber Dino Asia from Asia Cyber University, Viva Justicia from Universitas Diponegoro, and Ad Poltek from Politeknik Negeri Malang. The motion given in the finals was “The House will provide social assistance in the form of cryptocurrency in order to suppress the circulation of physical money.”
The UE CBA Manila team was then assigned to side with the government and present their ideas after a 15-minute window. All teams presented their arguments well and provided responsive rebuttals during the debate. The final round concluded with Cyber Dino Asia as the Opposition, and the last group to debate and discuss their ideas.
After a closed-door deliberation between the adjudicators, the UE CBA Manila team earned 3rd Place, Ad Poltek emerged in 2nd Place, and Viva Justicia was ranked 1st.
This marked the first time that a UE team participated and won such an award in an accounting debate competition that included five matches spread across the elimination round up to the final round.
Congratulations, Warrior CBA Debaters!
