The University of the East congratulates UE alumnus Japar B. Dimaampao on his appointment as the newest Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines! His appointment to the country’s highest judicial body was announced on September 14, 2021.
A native of Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, Associate Justice Dimaampao is a UE graduate twice over, having earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from the UE College Business Administration-Manila in 1982 and his Bachelor of Laws degree from the UE College of Law in 1987.
He was a consistent honor student and was a University Scholar during his entire stay in UE. He took and passed the licensure examination in accountancy in 1983. He was, however, deemed too young to receive a CPA license at 19 years old, leading him to pursue a Law degree, also in UE. He passed the Philippine Bar Exams in 1988.
His professional life has been, for the most part, as an educator—gradually gaining recognition as a Law professor. He was a member of the UE College of Law Faculty, as well as those of UST, FEU, MLQU and San Beda University, teaching Taxation, Commercial Law and Civil Law. He also served as a Professorial Lecturer of the Department of Shari’a Law and Jurisprudence of the Philippine Judicial Academy of the Supreme Court, and Lecturer of the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) in Taxation and Commercial Law. In addition, he has conducted lectures in Bar review classes in various law schools across the country. Associate Justice Dimaampao carries the distinction of having been the first Muslim Senior State Prosecutor, Bar Reviewer and Professor of Law.
On April 2, 2004, after serving as Regional Trial Court Judge and Executive Judge of Mandaluyong City, Associate Justice Dimaampao was appointed as Associate Justice of the Court of Appeals by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. At age 40, Associate Justice Dimaampao became the youngest magistrate appointed to the Appellate Court. He would be part of the Court of Appeals for 17 years, until his appointment to the Supreme Court by President Rodrigo R. Duterte.
Associate Justice Dimaampao was a 2003 finalist for the Judicial Excellence Awards. He was also accorded the Model Law Professor Award by the Huwarang Pilipino Program and was a Hall of Fame Awardee of the UE College of Law.
In 2006, he was recognized as one of UE’s 60 Most Outstanding Alumni on the occasion of the University’s 60th Foundation Anniversary.
He is the fourth UE alumnus (and second Muslim magistrate) to be appointed to the country’s highest court, after Associate Justice, former UE CLaw Dean and incumbent UE Trustee Dante O. Tinga (UE 1960 Bachelor of Laws graduate, Magna Cum Laude); former Chief Justice and now UE Trustee Lucas P. Bersamin (UE 1973 Bachelor of Laws graduate); and incumbent Associate Justice Rodil V. Zalameda (UE 1983 AB Political Science graduate).
Congratulations and kudos, Sir Warrior Associate Justice!
