{"id":29961,"date":"2024-08-20T12:07:14","date_gmt":"2024-08-20T04:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ue.edu.ph\/mla\/?p=29961"},"modified":"2024-08-20T12:07:14","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T04:07:14","slug":"ue-advisory-on-the-spread-of-volcanic-smog-vog-caused-by-the-recent-continuous-upwelling-of-taal-volcano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ue.edu.ph\/mla\/ue-advisory-on-the-spread-of-volcanic-smog-vog-caused-by-the-recent-continuous-upwelling-of-taal-volcano\/","title":{"rendered":"UE Advisory\u00a0on\u00a0the Spread\u00a0of\u00a0Volcanic\u00a0Smog (Vog)\u00a0Caused by the Recent Continuous\u00a0Upwelling\u00a0of\u00a0Taal\u00a0Volcano"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Vog\u00a0(volcanic smog) is a visible haze comprised of gas and an aerosol of tiny particles and acidic droplets created when sulfur dioxide (SO<sub>2<\/sub>) and other gases emitted from a volcano chemically interact with sunlight and atmospheric oxygen, moisture, and dust.\u00a0It\u00a0poses a health hazard by aggravating preexisting respiratory ailments.\u00a0SO<sub>2<\/sub> gas can irritate the skin and the tissues and mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and throat,\u00a0penetrate airways, produce respiratory distress in some individuals, and induce asthma symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>If you are presently in an area affected by Vog, observe the following precautions and protective measures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Check the air quality level daily.&nbsp;<\/strong>Through the Air Quality Management System page of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) website: https:\/\/air.emb.gov.ph\/ambient-air-quality-monitoring\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Limit outdoor activities&nbsp;to what\u2019s essential.&nbsp;<\/strong>Stay indoors to reduce exposure to vog and keep your doors and windows closed.&nbsp;If possible, run an air-conditioner or&nbsp;air purifier; both will remove the particulate sulfur compounds and acid gases from your indoor air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. <\/strong><strong>Avoid physical activity&nbsp;<\/strong>when vog levels are high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Mask up. <\/strong>When heading out is necessary, make sure to&nbsp;wear an N95 or KN95 face mask.&nbsp;If an N95 or KN95 mask is unavailable, a surgical mask may be used as a last resort. Regardless of outdoor activity, high-risk groups such as the elderly, pregnant, or those with asthma, lung, or heart disease, are advised to mask up.&nbsp;Ensure that the mask is properly fitted to form a seal around your nose and mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Stay hydrated.&nbsp;<\/strong>Drink water regularly&nbsp;to help against throat irritation and nasal congestion caused by vog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Avoid smoking, vaping, or using candles and essential oils<\/strong>&nbsp;as any of these may further compromise the air quality around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br><\/strong><strong>7. Keep your emergency kit on hand.<\/strong>&nbsp;Make sure&nbsp;to&nbsp;stock up on medications for&nbsp;allergies,&nbsp;asthma and&nbsp;flu.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br><\/strong><strong>8.
