Longtime UE Dentistry Dean Passes Away


Dr. Diampo Jahara Lim, DMD, Dip. OMS, a UE College of Dentistry graduate turned dean and a key figure in the dental health realm in the country, passed away on September 14, 2017. He was 82 years old.

In 1960, Dr. Lim earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, magna cum laude, from the UE College of Dentistry. Twenty-six years later, he was appointed as the College’s Dean, a position he would hold from 1986 all the way to his retirement in April 2006―a 20-year stint that saw the College gain further reputation as one of the country’s best dental schools for producing board topnotchers and accomplished dental professionals.

Right after his college graduation, Dr. Lim taught at the UE College of Dentistry for six years, then was accepted in the Japan Monbusho scholarship program at Japan’s Osaka University Dental School and Hospital, as a researcher and junior resident, for over two years. Upon returning to the Philippines, he taught again in his Alma Mater and was given the position of Associate Professor. From then on, he was promoted to key positions in the UE College of Dentistry, including becoming the UE CDent Associate Dean, a post he held from 1968 all the way to 1986. During his teaching stint, he worked on the side at the V. Luna Dental Infirmary, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

In 1968, he received a Diploma for Post Graduate Studies in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) from the Osaka University Dental School, Japan. Later on, in 1991, he was awarded certifications for completing trainings in Osseointegrated Dental Implants at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry; Advanced Dental Implant Education and International Implant Advanced Course at the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, in California, USA; and the Calcitek Prosthetics Course in Carlsbad, San Diego, California, USA.

Dr. Lim likewise assumed positions in different dental and non-dental associations, such as the Council of Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Continuing Professional Education (CPE), the Asian Pacific Dental Federation (APDF), the Philippines-Japan Society, the Institute of the Japanese Language under the Chairmanship of Ambassador Jose Laurel III, and the Asian Council of Japan Alumni (ASCOJA).

Through the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) and local dental societies all over the country, Dr. Lim had been a guest lecturer and resource speaker several times in different scientific seminars and symposia on oral surgery, oral pathology and oral diagnosis since 1969 up to earlier this decade.

He had been around the world as an official delegate to Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI) or the World Dental Federation and Asia Pacific Dental Federation (APDF/APRO) Congresses, especially during the 1980s and 1990s.

Dr. Lim was an active Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA) and International College of Dentists (ICD), Philippine Section; President of the Foundation for Outstanding Professional (FOP) of the Professional Regulation Commission; Regent of the Academy of Dentistry International (ADI), Philippine Section; Honorary President of the Macau Dental Association; and Chairman of the Committee on Constitution, Legislation and By-laws of the Philippine Dental Association.

Within 1968 to 1988, he wrote and published scientific papers in local and international journals, notably on “Early Diagnosis of Oral Cancer,” numerous articles on different oral tumors, “Clinical Study of Temporomandibular Joint Disturbances” and most recently, “Hepatitis B Virus Infection of Dentists in the Philippines.”

Dr. Lim was also able to share his time and expertise through community work, having been at the helm of a number of religious and civic organizations such as the Rotary Club of Sta. Mesa, Quezon City, the Sulu-Tawi-Tawi Young Professionals, and the Asian Pacific Dental Federation/Asia Pacific Regional Organisation (APDF/APRO), among others.

He was a recipient of several awards and recognitions. In 1958 to 1960, Dr. Lim received gold medals for three consecutive years for academic excellence from by the Commission on National Integration and the Office of the President of the Philippines.

Dr. Lim earned the Most Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of the East in 1975; Outstanding Alumnus award from the Philippine Association of the Japanese Ministry of Education Scholars; Most Outstanding Professional in Dentistry (1992) from the PRC and the Philippine Association of Board of Examiners (PABE); and Most Outstanding Health Professional in Dentistry from the Philippine Federation of Professionals Association (PFPA). He was a nominee of the search for the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) for Medicine in 1974.

He was a member of the Consensus Panel for the creation of the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao appointed by then President Corazon Aquino in 1987-88.

At UE, Dean Lim also served as Trustee of the University’s Foundation for Research and Advanced Studies, Inc. (UE-FRASI).

More recently, Dr. Lim was the commencement speaker of the joint UE Yearend Commencement Rites for graduating students of the UE Graduate School and Colleges of Law and Dentistry, held on April 19, 2013, at the UE Theater.

A native of Jolo, Sulu, Dr. Lim is survived by Alice S. Javier Lim and their children: Dr. Darwin Diampo (a faculty member of the UE College of Dentistry), Daniel Dennis (the College Secretary of the UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design), David Dickson and Donald Dean. (The fourth son, Douglas Dwayne, had passed away in June 2009).

Dr. Lim’s remains lie in state at Matthew 102 Chapel of the St. Peter Memorial Chapels on Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City. He will be laid to rest on September 23, 2017, after an 8:30 a.m. Mass, at the Eternal Garden Memorial Park in Caloocan City.

An exceptional achiever yet humble and low-key, Dr. Lim was a man of inspiration to many dentists and leaders. The UE community condoles with his entire family and expresses immense gratitude for all the work and service to the University and the country of the great Warrior that was Dean Diampo Jahara Lim.
