UE Alumnus Awarded with Lifetime Achievement Award by Campus Journalism Group


Dr. Romeo Sta. Maria Egot, a 1998 Bachelor of Arts, major in Communication Arts graduate of the UE College of Arts and Sciences-Caloocan, received the 2018 Gawad Dyornalismo Lifetime Achievement Award in Campus Journalism last May 26, at the Gawad Dyornalismo Awards Night at the Hotel Dominique in Tagaytay City. The program’s theme was “The Role of School Newspapers in the Promotion of ASEAN Integration and Inclusive Education.”

Currently the Principal of Libis Talisay Elementary School in Caloocan City, Dr. Egot got recognized for “dedicating time, strength and intellect in his teaching life, and championing the cause of journalism by nurturing the talents of budding campus journalists with a healthy mindset and competitive journalistic writing skills.”

As a UE student, Dr. Egot served as the President of the UE Caloocan Central Student Council (CSC) for two consecutive terms: school years 1996-97 and 1997-98. He was the Chairman of UE Caloocan’s Tinig ng Silangan Party Alliance from 1995 to 1997, was recognized as one of the Campus’s Top 12 Outstanding Student Council Officers of 1996, and was awarded the Most Outstanding CAS Caloocan Student in 1997.

After his graduation from UE in 1998, Dr. Egot earned undergraduate units at the University of Caloocan City and some Master in Education units from Trinity College of Quezon City. He also took up six units on Campus Writing and Advertising at the Philippine Normal University in 2004. In 2008, he earned his Master sa Pagtuturo sa Filipino, also from PNU. In 2015, he received his Doctor of Education, major in Educational Management degree from the Governor Andres Pascual College in Navotas City.

He passed the Elementary Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) in 1999, and the LET for Secondary Instructors a year later. His teaching career began in 1999 as a high school teacher and assistant principal at the Little Joy Learning School in 1999. He then worked as Teacher 1 at the Llano Elementary School from July 2001 to November 2005, and Bagong Silang Elementary School from November 2005 to January 2006. He was a Master Teacher 1 from January 2006 to January 2009, and a Master Teacher 2 from January 2009 to August 2014, all at Bagong Silang Elementary School.

He went on to become the Principal of Bagumbong Elementary School-Annex in August 2014 up to April 2015, of Eulogio Rodriguez Elementary School in April 2015 up to May 2018, and of Libis Talisay Elementary School in May 2018.

In addition, Dr. Egot served as a Lecturer 6 in Filipino at the Far Eastern University from 2010 to 2014, and Department of Education Division Coordinator for Elementary Journalism since April 2018.

In the field of campus journalism, Dr. Egot served as the Adviser for Ang Bagong Silang, the school organ of Bagong Silang Elementary School. Under his wing, the paper went on to receive numerous awards. These include winning 1st Place Pahinang Balita and adjudged 6th Best School Paper (out of 299 private and public school papers in the country) at the 2007 National School Press Conference (NSPC) in Baguio City. In the 2008 NSPC in Cotabato City, Ang Bagong Silang was hailed as the 3rd Best School Paper and 1st Place Pahinang Balita. In 2010, the paper won 4th Place Pahinang Isports in the NSPC held in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. A year later, Ang Bagong Silang took home 7th Place Pahinang Lathalain in the 2011 NSPC in Butuan City; and in 2013, the paper won 6th Place Pahinang Isports in the 2012 NSPC in Ormoc City, Leyte.

In 2016, under him as Principal, the school paper of Eulogio Rodriguez Elementary School, Ang Mabuhay, won 2nd Place Pahinang Lathalain in the 2016 NSPC in Koronadal, South Cotabato. In addition, campus newspapers that he handled were consistent winners in various school paper and broadcasting contests.

Dr. Egot himself was awarded Most Outstanding School Paper Adviser for NCR in 2009. In 2010, he was awarded the Philippines’ Most Outstanding School Paper Adviser at the NSPC in Tagum City.

Aside from all that, he was a consistent recipient of the Superintendent Gold Award, the highest award given by the Department of Education-Caloocan, from 2003 to 2011. He was recognized Most Outstanding Teacher by the Gawad Pampelikulang Samahan ng mga Dalubguro (PASADO) and received the Pambansang Samahan ng mga Tagapagtaguyod ng Filipino (PASATAF)’s Gawad Sigasig in 2006, 2008 and 2010. In 2010, PASATAF and DepEd awarded Dr. Egot with the Kauna-unahang Pambansang Natatanging Guro sa Filipino and was later on awarded Ulirang Guro sa Filipino by the Komisyon sa Wikang

In 2016, UE CAS Caloocan awarded him as an Outstanding Alumnus.

Gawad Dyornalismo is organized by the Center for the Promotion of Campus Journalism Inc. (CPCJ) in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Awards Council Inc. The award recognizes the contribution and effort of those involved in the field of school-based writing. The group also heralds individuals and groups who help fulfill CPCJ’s mission for the propagation of the Campus Journalism Act of 1991.
