UE Prof and Former Comm Arts Chair Presents Media-Study Paper at Nat’l Conference

UE College of Arts and Sciences-Manila faculty member Julius Cesar R. Pascual recently presented a paper at the National Communication Research Conference (NCRC) 2018. The conference, the theme of which was “Examining Philippine Media: Texts and Contexts,” was held on November 22-23, 2018, at the University of the Philippines Diliman; Prof. Pascual made his presentation on November 22, 2018, in the conference’s “Contending Voices” parallel session.

Prof. Pascual, an Associate Professor at UE CAS Manila, has been the incumbent Program Coordinator of the College’s Communication Arts Cluster since 2017. He was the Chair of the College’s Communication Arts Department from 2015 to 2017.

Prof. Pascual’s NCRC paper is on “Shadows of Mendiola massacre and Hacienda Luisita massacre: Media representations of the Kidapawan farmers and the discourses of social development in the Kidapawan Massacre.” It is a media and development study in line with his pursuit of a Ph.D. in Communication at UP, after passing the final defense of his dissertation final defense on May 21, 2018.

Prof. Pascual undertook the study seeing that “media and development discourses toward Filipino farmers must be thoroughly investigated because of the continuing maltreatment of local farm workers by the elite-dominated government, such as in the Kidapawan Massacre. Using [among others] broadsheet and online alternative opinion columns published in 2016 representing mainstream and alternative media…this textual analysis study qualitatively explores the media representations of farmers, as well as its development themes.” His study ultimately “proposes that media should suggest ways in which both people- and production-centered development would be complementary structures.”

Prof. Pascual was joined at the conference by seven UE CAS Manila students: AB Broadcasting Seniors Eda Rose Shane A. Caalaman, Ace Maveric E. Cruz, Pia Isabel M. Duloguin, Edemie M. Cabuniag, and Mikkaela-Jael T. Navarro, and AB Journalism Seniors Princess Marjorie Rebut and Christine Patricia C. Torralba. These students will echo the conference to UE CAS Manila students of the Communications Arts Cluster in January 2019.

Prof. Pascual is a graduate of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines twice over, having earned from it his degrees of Bachelor in Journalism in 2003 and Master of Arts in Language Teaching in 2010.
