UE CEng’g Manila Student is 2018 Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Student


Mr. Joshua Ferdinand B. Villafuerte, a 5th-year Bachelor of Science of Civil Engineering of the UE College of Engineering (CEng’g)-Manila, was honored as the 18th Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Student (MOCES). Mr. Villafuerte earned the award at the 21st National Civil Engineering Conference held on November 24, 2018, at Lou-is Resort and Restaurant in Balanga City, Bataan.

The award is given by the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers Inc. (PICE) to an outstanding student member of PICE who belongs to an accredited active student chapter. The award is handed in coordination with the various PICE chapters, student chapters, and Deans and Chairs of the Civil Engineering Department of schools and universities where there is an accredited PICE chapter.

An active member of the UE Association of Civil Engineering Students (ACES), Mr. Villafuerte is the Vice President for Internal Affairs of Junior PICE (JPICE)-Lungsod ng Maynila Chapter. At JPICE, he also serves as the Membership Committee Head and is the UE Manila Representative.

As a UE student, he served as the CEng’g Manila representative of the UE Bully-Free Life Advocates from July 2017 to July 2018. He was also the CEng’g Manila Student Council Business Manager for School Year 2017-2018. He was a member of the UE Bright Leaders’ Association for Zeal and Excellence (UE-BLAZE). Mr. Villafuerte also was the Party Chairman of the newly established Sandigan ng Silangan Party Alliance, and was the party’s candidate for Vice President in the University Student Council election in February 2018.

Mr. Villafuerte is a grantee of the Seibo Scholarship Foundation. In addition, he has been a recipient of the College Scholarship under UE’s Integrated University Scholarship program for the respective first semesters of SYs 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. He was also a nominee in the Executio Category of Eximia 2018: The Quest for JPICE-Lungsod ng Maynila’s Most Outstanding People.

The MOCES Award is selected based on the nominee’s academic performance, leadership/involvement in the PICE Student Chapter, community service, and the contents of an essay that the nominees were asked to write. The top five students based on the criteria shall be eligible for a final interview, from which the winner will be determined. Joining Mr. Villafuerte in the top five were the nominees from National University, Southern Luzon State University, University of the Philippines-Diliman and Laguna College.

Serving as Mr. Villafuerte’s mentors in the search were UE CEng’g Manila Civil Engineering professor, Engr. Mark Anthony L. Escober; UE-ACES Vice President for External Affairs Dan Erik Medina; the UE-ACES Adviser, Engr. Meinrado Samonte; and the PICE-Lungsod ng Maynila Chapter President, Engr. Medel F. Chua.

As the winner of MOCES, Mr. Villafuerte received P30,000.00 in cash and a plaque of distinction.
