UE Manila and UE Caloocan Now Both Granted CHED Autonomous Status!

The University of the East’s Manila and Caloocan Campuses have been granted the Autonomous Status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) effective this school year!

UE Manila was actually first granted the autonomous status in October 2009. The retention of the Manila Campus’ CHED-autonomous status marks its third successful Autonomous Status renewal after October 2012 and April 2016. This year, the higher education regulating body has likewise granted the Autonomous Status to UE Caloocan for the first time.

Both UE campuses were among the 68 private higher-education institutions granted the Autonomous Status in a memorandum signed by CHED Chairman Prospero E. De Vera III dated October 24, 2019.

The Autonomous Status is the highest recognition that CHED can grant any higher learning institution in recognition of a given academic institution’s commitment to excellence, and institutional sustainability and enhancement.

As autonomous private higher education institutions, UE Manila and UE Caloocan can enjoy several institutional benefits that will help the University improve and expand.

Among these are:
1. the authority to offer new courses and programs in both the graduate and undergraduate levels without the need to secure permission from CHED;
2. the privilege to establish linkages with foreign higher education institutions;
3. exemption from regular monitoring and evaluation by CHED;
4. priority in the grant of subsidies and other financial incentives;
5. exemption from the issuance of a Special Order for graduates, thereby easing the claiming of University documents such as the diploma and transcript of records;
6. the privilege to raise tuition rates without securing a CHED permit;
7. the opportunity to establish extension classes and offer programs such as distance learning; and
8. the privilege to determine and prescribe their curricular programs to achieve global competence.

For the record, the Autonomous Status has no influence on the occasional need to suspend classes such as due to inclement weather.

UE Manila and UE Caloocan’s autonomous statuses took effect on June 1, 2019, and will be in place until May 31, 2021.

Congratulations on this great feat, UE Manila and UE Caloocan communities!
