UE 74th Foundation Anniversary Greeting from Warrior Fencer Samantha Kyle Catantan

Happy Anniversary, Lualhati! — Top PHL-Warrior Fencer

In line with UE’s 74th Foundation Anniversary, here is an inspirational message to the University and the UE Community from UE Red Warriors Girls’ Fencing Team Member Samantha Kyle L. Catantan.

Ms. Catantan is graduating with Honors from the Accountancy, Business and Management Strand of the UE Basic Education Department-Manila in the upcoming UE Senior High School Virtual Commencement Rites this October 2020.

As a member of the UE Red Warriors Girls’ Fencing Team, Ms. Catantan has helped steer the team to championships in the girls’ division of the annual UAAP fencing tournaments and has been the consecutive Most Valuable Player awardee in the fencing girls’ division of UAAP seasons 78, 79, 80, 81 and 82.

She earned acclaim while representing the Philippines in various international tournaments, winning her first individual gold medal in an international competition in last year’s Asian U23 Fencing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. In the 2018 Asian U23, she was part of the team that bagged the gold medal in the team foil event.

Ms. Catantan likewise earned a silver medal in women’s foil in the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in August 2017. More recently, she had won a bronze medal in women’s foil in the 30th SEAG in the Philippines, in December 2019.

Three years ago, as a Grade 10 student of UE Manila, she was heralded as a Bagong Rizal awardee via the search for “Mga Bagong Rizal: Pag-asa ng Bayan” by the Philippine Center for Gifted Education. As one of 17 Bagong Rizal awardees from all over the Philippines formally recognized in November 2017, Ms. Catantan was seen as emulating the ideals of Dr. Jose P. Rizal and exemplifying the national hero’s excellence, creativity and passion. Nominees to the search had to be among the top 5% of their class and have an outstanding ability in one or more multiple intelligences.

For her extraordinary achievements, Ms. Catantan was offered an athletic scholarship by the Penn State University in Pennsylvania, USA. She will be part of the university’s varsity fencing team, the Nittany Lions, which placed runner-up in Division I of the US National Collegiate Athletics Association competitions last year.

Cheers and thank you, Samantha, for being an example of how the University has been fUEling bright futures!
