UE’s Rolando “Brenn” M. Perez, 51

The University of the East (UE) mourns deeply the untimely death of its Physical Education (P. E.) Acting Director Rolando “Brenn” Mateum Perez and expresses its heartfelt sympathy to his bereaved family.

Brenn, as he was fondly called, succumbed to heart attack at 8:45 p.m., Friday, July 10 at the Sta. Teresita General Hospital, Quezon City, the day after his 51st birthday.

For almost 30 years since November 5, 1979, starting out in UE as a Physical Education Instructor at the P.E. Department, Brenn served the UE in various capacities, with dedication and loyalty. On June 17, 1988, he was designated concurrent part-time Sports Coordinator, then on January 1, 1997 as full-time Sports Coordinator. On October 15, 1997, he was appointed as Assistant P. E. Director and after the retirement of the P. E. Director, on June 1, 2007, as Acting P. E. Director.

Brenn steered the UE Men’s Volleyball team to win the 1982 University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Volleyball Competition crown.

In-charge of all UE sports-related activities, he orchestrated the UE Pep Rally as a send off to all UE athletes competing at the UAAP season 72 last July 9, his 51st birthday.  He passed on at the eve of the July 11 UAAP season 72 opening rites. The UAAP Board, led by its President, Anton Montinola, paid tribute to Brenn during the league’s opening ceremonies, including video clips of  “Brenn” and a moment of silence to pray for him.

Brenn served as UE’s representative to the UAAP Board since 1988, the longest serving member of the current UAAP Board. He was the 1990-91, 1998-99 UAAP Secretary-Treasurer and in 2006-07 when UE hosted the UAAP.

Surviving him are his wife Maria Fe Profetiza ”Iza” Ocampo Perez; children Brian Michael, Roland Anthony, Angelica Charisse, Alfonso Jose and John Ross; daughter in-law Catherine; grandson Bren Russ Michael; mother Delia; brothers Alfonso and Referendum Ferdinand; sisters Shirley Rowena and Cherrylyn Alfonza.

UE officials, athletes, UE varsity teams coaches, UE P.E. Dept. instructors and staff and friends will offer a Special Mass for “Brenn” on Wednesday, July 15, 12 p.m., at the St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, UE Manila.

Brenn’s remains can be viewed at the Arlington Memorial Chapels, Araneta Avenue, Quezon City; he will be interred beside his father at the Eternal Gardens Memorial Park, Baesa, Quezon City on Saturday, July 18, after a 9 a.m. Mass.
