UE Fencing Team Wins Big in Xavier Fencing Cup

Still fresh from their UAAP 75 championship sweep, the UE Red Warriors-Boys and Girls’ Fencing Teams continued to prove their fencing might by dominating the Xavier Fencing Cup 2013, held last January 26, 2013 at Xavier School in San Juan City.

The entire UE squad of high school student athletes won a total of 14 medals: eight gold, four silver and two bronze medals. They competed against teams of various high schools such as St. Pedro Poveda College, St. Paul’s College, National University High School, Xavier School, Immaculate Conception Academy, and Lipa Academy for Math and Science.

The UE Red Warriors-Boys’ Fencing Team took home eight medals: four gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

Winning individual gold medals were Francois Nowelle Licono in the Men’s Foil under 18 category, and Christian Jhester Concepcion in Boys’ Foil under 15 category. Also winning gold medals were Concepcion, Samuel Tranquilan and Felix Almeder Bayatan in the Boys’ Team Foil under 15, and Edromel Montecino, Chrisler James Depusoy and Troy Eleazar in the Boys’ Team Epee under 15.

Tranquilan and Montecino likewise won silver medals in Boys’ Foil under 15 and Boys’ Epee under 15, respectively. Completing the Boys’ Teams’ roster of individual medalists are Bayatan, a bronze medalist in Boys’ Foil under 15, and Depusoy, who earned the Boys’ Epee under 15 bronze medal.

Not to be outdone, the UE Red Warriors Girls’ Fencing Team took home six medals: four gold and two silver medals.

Winning individual gold medals were Wilhelmina Lozada in Women’s Foil under 18, Divine Romero in Girls’ Foil under 15, and Mickyle Rain Bustos in Girls’ Epee under 15. The team of Bustos, Romero, Claire Dianne Galang and Aliana Nicole Cortey won a gold medal in the Girls’ Team Epee under 15.

Clara Marian Senga won the silver medal in Girls’ Foil under 15, while Romero, Senga and Galang also won the silver medal in Girls’ Team Foil under 15.

All the participating fencers are from the UE Elementary and Secondary Laboratory Schools in UE Manila.

The UE Red Warriors-Fencing Team is under the mentorship of Head Coach Rolando Canlas, along with Coaches Chester Uy and Rufelrino Endriano, and Assistant Coaches Christian Canlas and Alex Ragot.
