Mr. Cipriano “Zip” De Guzman Jr., a Filipino baritone and alumnus of the UE Chorale, is having a thriving, prestigious singing career eleven years since he earned his AB Communication Arts degree from the UE College of Arts and Sciences-Manila in 2005.

A report by writer Antonio C. Hila published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on its October 31, 2016, issue, says that Mr. De Guzman recently won top prizes in several vocal competitions in Japan. These include the 1st Prize in the Opera category of the 7th American Protégé International Competition of last June; the 2nd Prize in the Vocal category in the 10th Yokohama International Music Competition at the Tokyo Gotanda Cultural Center last August (with the competition’s finals set for this November); and a Special Prize at the 8th Tokyo International Vocal Competition held at Tokyo Sunny Hill last October 10. Mr. Hila’s report can be read here: http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/242422/filipino-baritone-wins-awards-in-japan/

An earlier piece by cultural writer Pablo A. Tariman reported that this Sunday, November 6, 2016, Mr. De Guzman will be one of a number of invited artists who will sing at the Hiroshima International House Festival. The 32-year-old, Laguna-born UE graduate will go on to represent Hiroshima’s Elizabeth University at Indonesia’s Sanata Dharma University on Nov. 17, then will be a bass soloist in a special performance of
Handel’s “Messiah” at the Elizabeth University of Music Christmas Concert. Not long after the start of the new year, Mr. De Guzman will be one of the guest soloists of the Hiroshima City International New Year Concert on January 8, 2017. Mr. Tariman’s report can be read here: http://verafiles.org/a-filipino-baritone-on-the-spirit-of-hiroshima/

The young Zip had led a busy life as a UE student: He was a college scholar and a Dean’s lister for at least two semesters; won 2nd Place in the College Statistics Quiz Bee of school year 2001-2002; was Assistant Librarian of the UE Chorale, Secretary of the CAS Manila Theater Group and a member of the Communication Arts Club; emerged in 1st Place at a CAS Foundation Day Singing Contest, was a Mr. & Ms. UE semi-finalist and a semi-finalist in the Oration contest of Speechfest 2003.

Of being a son of Lualhati, Mr. De Guzman’s words from 2005 carry added weight given his many achievements thus far: “I’m proud to be a UE graduate, because the University molded me into a better person, a strong, educated, well-mannered individual ready for any challenge that the future may hold.”

Congratulations and keep it up, Warrior Singer!
