UE Graduate School Dean Awarded as Eminent PNU Alumnus

Dr. Julian E. Abuso, the Dean of the UE Graduate School, has been awarded by Philippine Normal University awarded as a recipient of PNU’s Gawad Sulo for Eminent Alumni! The awarding, held on January 18, 2017, was a highlight of PNU’s 25th anniversary celebration.

Dean Abuso had earned his BS in Elementary Education in 1966 from the then Philippine Normal College, which he describes as “a strong bridge that ushered him to the doorsteps of UP Diliman.” At UP, he went on to serve as Social Studies and Language Arts teacher for five years and then as instructor and professor of Anthropology of Education until retirement.

His professional career in UP Diliman flourished through teaching, research and academic leadership. He inspired graduate students to excel in thesis and dissertation writing that resulted in awards. His researches include countrywide policy study on a culture-responsive curriculum for an indigenous population and school dropout in basic education, among others. As an academic administrator, he served as three-term Chairperson of the Division of Curriculum and Instruction and Principal of the UP Integrated School.

PNU’s recognition of Dean Abuso includes his academic leadership at UE, being a former Dean of the UE College of Arts and Sciences-Caloocan and the current Dean of the UE Graduate School. In these capacities, he introduced pioneering academic traditions—the CAMANAVA Studies Conference, the Gawad Bagani sa Komunikasyon and the ueKAMAYNILAAN Graduate Research Conference. His latest initiative is the UE GS’s Doctor of Philosophy in Multidisciplinary Metropolitan Studies program, which will be opened in June 2017.

The award reckons with his academic-professional advancement: Master of Arts in Education (UP Diliman), Master of Arts in International Development Education (Leland Stanford Junior University), and PhD in International and Development Education, major in Anthropology of Education (University of Pittsburgh). He earned those last two degrees while under scholarships: a UP Fellowship-Stanford Ford Foundation Fellowship and a Fulbright Study Grant, respectively.

Congratulations, UE Graduate School Dean Julian E. Abuso!
