Red Warriors Sweep UAAP Fencing Tournament Championships for Fifth Straight Year

#Defendthecrown they did: The UE Red Warriors Fencing Teams completed a sweep of the UAAP Men’s, Women’s, Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing Championships at the UAAP 79 Fencing Tournament on February 8 to 11, 2017, at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila!

This marked the Warrior Fencers’ fifth consecutive sweep of the UAAP fencing titles.

UE’s Warrior Fencers emerged as 10-peat winners in the Women’s Division, 5-peat winners in the Men’s Division, 7-peat winners in the Boys’ Division and 6-peaters in the Girls’ Division.

The Men’s Team won a total of nine medals: four golds, two silvers and one bronze.

In the Men’s individual competitions, Nathaniel Perez and Christian Jhester Concepcion won a gold medal each in Men’s Foil and Men’s Sabre, respectively. Teammate Marlow Nicole Osayan took home the silver in Men’s Epee, while Sammuel Tranquilan and Malcolm Jeremy Valena got a bronze medal each in Men’s Foil and Men’s Sabre, respectively.

In the team competitions, the quartet of Christian Jhester Concepcion, John Christian Concepcion, Nathaniel Perez and Sammuel Tranquilan captured the gold medal in the Team Foil event. Also winning a gold medal was the group of Christian Jhester Concepcion, Edberto Gonzales, Nathaniel Perez and Malcolm Jeremy Valena in Team Sabre. The team of John Christian Concepcion, Marlowe Nicole Osayan, Nathaniel Perez and Sammuel Tranquilan settled for the silver in Team Epee.

In addition to the medals, outgoing UAAP athlete Nathaniel Perez was awarded as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, his third overall MVP recognition.

The Women’s Team brought home eight medals: four gold, two silver and two bronze.

Justine Gail Tinio won UE’s sole individual gold medal in Women’s Foil. Wilhelmina Lozada and Allaine Nicole Cortey won a silver medal each in Women’s Foil and Women’s Sabre, respectively, while Liezel Lopez and Drew Allysa Celso both took home a bronze medal apiece in Women’s Epee and Women’s Sabre, respectively.

In the team competitions, the Warrior Fencers swept the gold medals in all three events: The team of Ma. Johanna Castillo, Allaine Nicole Cortey, Wilhelmina Lozada and Justine Gail Tinio for Team Foil; Mickyle Rain Bustos, Liezel Lopez, Wilhelmina Lozada and Justine Gail Tinio for Team Epee; and Hazeline Jewel Alcaide, Drew Allysa Celso, Allaine Nicole Cortey and Justine Gail Tinio for Team Sabre.

The Boys’ Team won five gold, one silver and two bronze medals, garnering a total of eight medals.

Winning gold medals in individual competitions were Prince John Felipe in Boys’ Foil, and Reynaldo Perez Jr. in Boys’ Epee. Jesus Anthony Tolentino won a silver medal in Boys’ Sabre, while Shawn Nicolei Felipe and Alfred Dunhill Bacani took home the bronze medal in Boys’ Foil and Boys’ Sabre, respectively.

The Boys’ Team also swept the gold medals in all three team events: the team of Robert Ygnatius Cabaero, Daniel Canlas, Prince John Felipe and Shawn Nicolei Felipe for Team Foil; Xavier Dominic Arabaca, Daniel Canlas, Aurell Florence Obzunar and Reynaldo Perez Jr. for Team Epee; and Alfred Dunhill Bacani, Prince John Felipe and Jesus Anthony Tolentino for Team Sabre

Warrior Fencer Prince John Felipe was recognized as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Shawn Nicolei Felipe was the tournament’s Rookie of the Year.

The Girls’ Team won six gold and three silver medals, putting their medal haul at nine. The young Warrior Fencers swept the gold and silver medals in the individual competitions. Winning a gold medal each were Samantha Kyle Catantan for Girls’ Foil, Mira Irish Dorimon for Girls’ Epee and Queen Denise Dalmacio in Girls’ Sabre. Maricar Matienzo, Jaymi Delos Santos and Carla Marie Arreza all won a silver medal each in Girls’ Foil, Girls’ Epee and Girls’ Sabre, respectively.

The UE Girls’ Team likewise swept the gold medals across all three team events: the team of Samantha Kyle Catantan, Andrea Jannelle Matias, Maricar Matienzo and Etyria Olarte for Team Foil; Jaymi Delos Santos, Mira Irish Dorimon, Andrea Jannelle Matias and Iya Schofield for Team Epee; and Carla Marie Arreza, Samantha Kyle Catantan, Queen Denise Dalmacio and Danica Emilliana Yanes for Team Sabre.

Samantha Kyle Catantan was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Eytria Olarte was awarded the tournament’s Rookie of the Year.

The UE Red Warriors Fencing Teams are under the mentorship of Head Coach Rolando Canlas, Coaches Chester Uy and Rufelrino Endriano, and Assistant Coaches Christian Canlas and Alex Ragot.
