UE Lawn Tennis Warriors Claims UE’s First UAAP Lawn Tennis Crown!

The incumbent UE Red Warriors Men’s Lawn Tennis Team made history by winning the University’s first ever UAAP Men’s Lawn Tennis crown after turning back the UST Growling Tigers, three matches to one, in Game 2 of the UAAP 79 Men’s Lawn Tennis Finals last March 22, 2017, at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila.

Warrior tennis player Alberto “Aj” Lim Jr. fired the opening salvo, sweeping Francis Suazo of UST, 6-0, 6-0, in the first match of the day.

The duo of Rolly John Saga and Rogelio Estaño then extended UE’s lead to two matches to none, after defeating Tigers Clarance Cabahug and Joel Cabusas, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, in a grueling two-hour doubles match.

The Lawn Tennis Warriors experienced a momentary setback after Rodolfo Barquin Jr. failed to secure a win against UST’s Dave Mosqueda, 4-6, 7-3, 3-6.

It was a different story for the second doubles match of the game, where Warriors Paulo Baran and Jericho delos Santos took on UST’s Christian Lopez and Bernlou Bering. This grueling match’s first set went to the UST duo, 5-7, while the second set decidedly went to the Red Warriors, 6-2. The third straight began with five straight points going to UST, before the Warrior Tennis Players came from behind and pulled an upset, and in the process secured the UAAP 79 Lawn Tennis championship crown.

In addition to the UE team’s first ever Lawn Tennis crown, Warrior tennister Aj Lim Jr. was adjudged the league’s Most Valuable Player. Aj is the youngest member of the Philippine Davis Cup and has competed in the French Open and the Australian Open, and at Wimbledon.

The Lawn Tennis Warriors dominated the entire tournament, finishing the elimination round with a record of nine wins and one loss, the latter dye merely to a technicality.

The Champion UE Red Warriors Men’s Lawn Tennis Team is composed of Reun Hibionada, Rodolfo Barquin Jr., Aj Lim Jr., Josshua Kinaadman, Paolo Baran, Harry Dave Karon, Jericho delos Santos, Rogelio Estaño Jr., Jomar Medalla, Rolly John Saga and Justine Salinas.

They are under the helm of Philippine National Lawn Tennis Team Head Coach Numero G. Lim, with Coach Roel Licayan and Assistant Coaches Fritz Verdad and Arithmetico Lim.
