UE SHS Manila Professor, Excellent Paper Awardee in International Solid Waste Management Conference

UE Manila Senior High School Science Teacher Raymund N. Fantonalgo was recognized as one of the Excellent Paper Awardees at the 6th International Conference on Solid Waste Management (ICONSWM) 2016, on November 24 to 26, 2016, at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Belonging to the SHS faculty of the UE Elementary and Secondary Laboratory Schools (ESLS), Prof. Fantonalgo presented his paper on “Using Sargassum species and kitchen waste as substrates for Vermicast production.” The study compares the amount of vermicast (worm feces) harvested and the survival of worms using two substrates: Sargassum, a brown seaweed, and kitchen waste.

Per Prof. Fantonalgo, the study can be used by coastal communities in livelihood programs such as fertilizer production in the forms of compost and vermicast. In addition, the study’s findings can help farmers make their own natural fertilizers instead of purchasing.

Prof. Fantonalgo submitted his research to the ICONSWM 2016 in May 2016, after being notified by a colleague. By October 2016, he was informed by the conference board that he would be one of the conference’s presenters. A total of 282 researchers presented their studies at the conference; out of these 282 individuals, only several were awarded with the Excellent Paper Awardees. Among them was Prof. Fantonalgo, who says that the recognition was beyond his expectations.

Inspired by the award, the UE ESLS SHS teacher vows to continue to do more research in the field of science and social studies to help uplift the status of science and technology in the country.

Congratulations, Warrior Researcher!
