UE CFAD Students Win Big in Shell National Students Art Competition!

Congratulations to the UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (CFAD) students who won in the recently concluded 50th Shell National Students Art Competition!

There were 12 warrior artists who emerged as finalists in three of the four categories of the competition. Of these, four managed to bag top spots across the three categories.

In the competition’s Oil/Acrylic category, Kenneth H. Santiago, a 4th-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), major in Painting student, won First Place for his 36” x 29” entry “Living Through Enigmatic Passion,” while 4th-year BFA, major in Advertising Arts (ADA) student Queen Jewel G. Abo was awarded 3rd Place for her 24” x 36” painting “Sa Likod ng mga Kulay.”

In the Watercolor category, BFA ADA senior Bayani Jamesson I. Galera’s 16” x 20” painting titled “Lakbay” bagged 3rd Place. His entry was one of the 12 finalists in that category.

Another UE BFA ADA senior, Arvin Santos, won 3rd Place in the Sculpture category for his 12” x 6” x 17”, partly red sculpture “Laman ng Loob.”

They were all awarded during the recognition program held on October 9, 2017, at the Ayala Museum.

Among UE’s oil-acrylic category 66 finalists in all were six other UE students: Ace Arvin B. Aniceto (4th-year BFA Painting) for “White is the Color of Sadness,” Jayroll P. Francisco (3rd-year BFA Painting) for “Sea of Faces (My Rough Journey),” Bayani Jamesson Galera for “Hiraya (Visions),” Marc Lawrence R. Martin (4th-year BFA Painting) for “Lakbay Diwa,” Naerron Danno C. Navarro (3rd-year BFA ADA) for “Anino ng Pangamba di na Muli Makikita,” and Arvin G. Santos (4th-year BFA ADA) for “Hindi Patas.”

Among the 11 finalists in all for the sculpture category were four other UE CFAD students: Matthew B. Adolfo (3rd-year BFA ADA, “Tuloy Tuloy Lang Tungo sa Pangarap”), Janica Mae L. Fernandez (3rd-year BFA ADA, “Kaya Kong Maghirap para sa Inyo”), Vincent Jordan M. Santos (3rd-year BFA ADA, “Byahe ni Juan”) and Rhymie Rose D. Victoria (3rd-year BFA ADA, “Pauwi na Ako”).

Now on its 50th year, the Shell National Students Art Competition (NSAC) aims to bring out the best among Filipino youth, as they are given the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents and usher them into the local art scene. Among its previous winners were renowned Filipino artists Jose Joya, Frederico Alcuaz, Ang Kiukok and Ben “BenCab” Cabrera.

Counting the entries to the Digital Fine Arts category, there were a total of 859 entries in all for the 50th Shell NSAC from all over the country.

The 50th NSAC Oil/Acrylic judges were Norberto Carating, Nestor Olarte Vinluan, Igan D’Bayan, Elmer Borlongan and Jose Tence Ruiz.

For the Sculpture category, the judges were Michael Cacnio, Salvador Alonday and Junyee.
For the Watercolor category, the judges were Pablo Baen Santos, Egai T. Fernandez and UE College of Fine Arts alumnus Renato R. Habulan.
