Grade 12 UE Students Make Their Mark at National Physics Conference Via Their Own Science Investigatory Projects!

A University of the East (UE) contingent composed of seven Grade 12/Senior High School (SHS) students of UE Manila got to present two papers at the Science Investigatory Project Competition of the recent 19th Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (SPVM) National Physics Conference.

The competition, which was held on October 19, 2017, in San Carlos University, Cebu City, is aimed at increasing science consciousness among the youth in private and public junior and senior high schools. The conference itself was part of the 2017 ASEAN Conference on Advanced Functional Materials and Nanotechnology.

Guided by UE Manila SHS Physics teacher John Paul C. Cabahug, the group of UE Grade 12 students Nicole Angelica Llanes, Ma. Andrea Nicole Arceo, Ralph Andrei Amurao, James Andrei Corpin, Jewell Sisor and Herjay Manlangit was one of the top 15 (out of 79) group finalists, and emerged as 4th Place overall, in the oral presentations with their paper on “Using improvised condenser to produce vapour-based potable filtered water: An alternative source during calamities.”

Also via Prof. Cabahug’s guidance, UE Gr. 12 student Jascha Gil Sison competed against 57 other poster competition participants with his project, “Utilization of cost efficient improvised aeroponics setup: Its effects to the growth of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic).”

Endorsed by the Commission on Higher Education and the Department of Education, the National Physics Conference was part of the 2017 ASEAN Conference on Advanced Functional Materials and Nanotechnology and the 5th International Meeting for Complex Systems, which were attended by several acclaimed researchers and physicists. The former was organized in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).

The three-day event opened with the said ASEAN Conference. The participants’ respective project presentations ended with a tour and an awarding ceremony.

The UE students were also mentored by Profs. Eunice E. Olano, Raymund Fantonalgo, Rhodelyn Saban and Raynar Joseph Uybarreta, and were supported by the SHS Science faculty members and edified by the Research Program of the UE Manila ESLS-SHS Department headed by Dr. Nieva J. Discipulo as Principal and Assistant Principal Gerardo V. Venturina. All were supported by the UE College of Education Dean, Dr. Evelina M. Vicencio; the UE Office of Research Coordination Director, Dr. Olivia C. Caoili; the UE Manila Chancellor, Dr. Linda P. Santiago; and UE’s President and Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Ester A. Garcia.
