A group of fifth-year BS Electronics Engineering (ECE) students of the UE College of Engineering-Caloocan has been declared the Champion team in Engineering Innovations Expo 2018, an exhibit-competition held on January 28, 2018, at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.

UE ECE Caloocan’s Team PLANTHEUS—composed of I.J. M. Carido, Kent Merson I. De Lara, May Angelou M. Estacio, Christopher M. Manluco, Crisza V. Concepcion, Raziel Raven C. Cruz, Dave A. Cordova and Flynn Edmund T. Tolentino—bested nine other teams from various institutions in the competition’s final round. Landing in 4th Place overall was another team of fifth-year UE ECE Caloocan students—Team ASTRID, composed of BS ECE seniors Vania Maria V. Dela Cruz, Rodel M. Dellomas, Julius Ken Eric R. Gallenero, Ramwel Abram A. Mendoza, Marc Eugene A. Abrogar, J-Marc Adordionicio and Hansely Kyle A. Laurel.

Acting as the UE teams’ coaches were and Engr. Rommel G. Ramos for Team PLANTHEUS and Engr. Mark Anthony Aseoche for Team ASTRID.

The team’s names refer to their respective research titles: PLant Aeroponic Nurturing Technology through Holistic Environment in Urban Society for Team PLANTHEUS and Application of Smart Home Technology for Renewable Energy using IoT and Data Acquisition for Team ASTRID.

The competition was composed of two rounds: an elimination round and a final round. The elimination round saw 26 schools competing for 10 finalist slots. They were given a booth with their respective prototype and where infographics were displayed. These booths were then visited by the judges, and each team had five minutes to present and defend their mock-ups.

In the competition’s final round, all ten teams were given 10 minutes to present their idea, product or technique to the panel of judges, and another five minutes for defense.

The awarding ceremony for the Expo was held at the University Hotel in UP Diliman.

Both Team PLANTHEUS and Team ASTRID were participants of the Synergy: Electrical and Electronics Engineering Summit last November 2017, also in UP Diliman. At that Summit’s Ingenious Ideas competition, Team PLANTHEUS won 2nd Place while Team ASTRID earned 3rd Place.

The Engineering Innovations Expo 2018 aims to enhance the communicative and entrepreneurial skills of Engineering students, and to provide Engineering students an avenue to apply classroom knowledge in developing new products or techniques, and to inspire Engineering students with the spirit of innovation.

Congratulations, Warrior Engineering students!
