UE CBA Senior Named One of Ten Rizal Model Students

Marielle Mataya, a 5th-year BS Accountancy student of the UE College of Business Administration-Manila, was named one of the Top 10 of this year’s Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines. The awarding ceremony was held on December 30, 2017, at the International Headquarters of the Knights of Rizal at Port Area in Manila.

Ms. Mataya, the current President of the UE Manila Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (UE JPIA), is an academic achiever and active in various extracurricular and outreach activities.

In a statement, Ms. Mataya was surprised with the announcement, believing that she was up against other outstanding students from all over the Philippines. She stressed that being a responsible student leader is “a reminder that one’s desire to be an excellent student shouldn’t hinder one to serve other people, inside and outside the University.”

She adds, “I’m really grateful that I’ve met Filipino youth who are not only students that are academically good, but also leaders with a strong advocacy. We may come from different provinces, we may have different experiences and paths, but we have one goal: the betterment of the Philippines.”

For the longest time, this prestigious student award by the Knights of Rizal has recognized young Filipino students for their academic excellence, community involvement and admirable leadership skills inside and outside their schools.

Former Chief Justice and UE Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) recipient Reynato S. Puno, current Supreme Commander of the Knights of Rizal, gave the awards to the recipients.

Ms. Mataya is the third UE student to receive the Jose Rizal Model Student of the Philippines, after two then AB Political Science students of the UE College of Arts and Sciences-Manila: Allen S. Mercado, who was awarded in 2009 and graduated in 2010, Magna Cum Laude; and Grant Buena Joy C. Mesa, who was awarded in 2013 and graduated in 2014, Summa Cum Laude.

Congratulations, Warrior Leader and Jose Rizal Model Student Marielle Mataya!
