UE Fencing Teams Sweep UAAP Fencing Championships Anew!

UE’s grand-slam reign in UAAP fencing continues as the entire, indomitable UE Red Warriors Fencing Team copped all four tournament championships in the UAAP 80 Fencing Tournament!

The tournament, which was was held from February 8 to 11, 2018 at the PSC Fencing Center at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City, saw the UE fencing teams emerge as the “11-peat” champions in the Women’s Tournament, “6-peat” winners in the Men’s Tournament, “8-peat” winners in the Boys’ Tournament and “7-peaters” in the Girls’ Tournament. Overall, this marks the Warrior Fencers’ sixth consecutive sweep of the UAAP fencing titles.

The team won 30 medals in total: 18 gold, nine silver and three bronze medals.

The UE Women’s Fencing Team won a total of seven medals: five golds and two silvers. Warrior Fencer Wilhelmina Lozada was adjudged as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP). Ms. Lozada also won a gold medal in Individual Foil, Team Foil and Team Epee, and was a silver medalist in Team Sabre.

The other gold medalists among the Lady Warrior Fencers are Mickyle Rein Bustos in Individual Epee; Allaine Nicole Cortey in Individual Sabre; the team of Mickyle Rein Bustos, Janica Bianca Angela Escalambre, Liezel Lopez and Wilhelmina Lozada in Team Epee; and Mickyle Rein Bustos, Ma. Johanna Castillo, Allaine Nicole Cortey and Wilhelmina Lozada in Team Foil.

Drew Allysa Celso and the team of Hazelline Jewel Alcaide, Drew Allysa Celso, Allain Nicole Cortey and Wilhelmina Lozada both won silver medals in Individual Sabre and Team Sabre, respectively.

The Men’s Team amassed eight medals: four golds, three silvers and one bronze. UE’s Sammuel Tranquilan was the tournament’s MVP. Mr. Tranquilan won three gold medals―one each in Individual Foil, Team Foil and Team Sabre―and a silver medal in Team Epee.

Fellow Warrior Fencer Christian Jhester Concepcion won a gold medal in Individual Sabre. In the team events, the teams of Christian Jhester Concepcion, John Christian Concepcion, Marlow Nicole Osayan and Sammuel Tranquilan, and Christian Jhester Concepcion, Sammuel Tranquilan. Malcolm Jeremy Valena and Jinro Villanueva both won a gold medal each in Team Epee and Team Sabre, respectively.

Winning silver medals were Marlow Nicole Osayan in Individual Epee and the team of Christian Jhester Concepcion, John Christian Concepcion, Marlowe Nicole Osayan and Sammuel Tranquilan in Team Epee.

John Christian Concepcion won the team’s lone bronze medal, in Individual Foil.

The UE Boys’ Fencing Team took home six medals: three golds, two silvers and a bronze. Prince John Felipe, the UAAP 79 Boys’ Fencing MVP, was again awarded as this season’s tournament male juniors fencing MVP. He won a gold medal in Individual Foil and Team Foil, and a bronze medal in Team Sabre.

Also winning gold medals were the teams of Xavier Arabaca, Shawn Nicollei Felipe, Aurell Florence Obzunar and Reynaldo Perez Jr. in the Team Epee event, and Robert Ygnatius Cabaero, Prince John Felipe, Shawn Nicollei Felipe and Jamil Joseph Sebastian in Team Foil.

Winning silver medals were Reynaldo Perez Jr. in Individual Epee and Shawn Nicollei Felipe in Individual Foil.

The team of Robert Ygnatius Cabaero, Prince John Felipe, John Michael Sotto and Jesus Anthony Tolentino won the Team Sabre bronze medal.

The Girls’ Team, on the other hand, won a whopping nine medals: six gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze medal. SEA Games 2017 silver medalist Samantha Catantan was the tournament MVP—her third in the UAAP. Ms. Catantan won gold medals in Individual Foil, Team Foil and Team Sabre.

Fellow Warrior Fencer Shareen Angel Francesca Beltran was awarded as the tournament’s Rookie of the Year. Ms. Beltran was part of the team that won the gold medal in Team Sabre.

Winning gold medals as well were Mira Irish Dorimon in Individual Epee; Karla Marie Arezza in Individual Sabre; the team of Jaymi Delos Santos, Mira Irish Dorimon, Andrea Janelle Matias and Cyrylle Anne Schofield in Team Epee; Anne Nicole Baring, Samantha Kyle Catantan, Maricar Matienzo and Eytria Olarte in Team Foil; and Karla Marie Arreza, Angel Francesca Beltran, Samantha Kyle Catantan and Evielyn Joy Javinar in Team Sabre.

Taking home silver medals were Jaymi Delos Santos in Individual Epee and Maricar Matienzo in Individual Foil. Evielyn Joy Javinar won the bronze medal in Individual Sabre.

The UE Red Warriors Fencing Teams are under the tutelage of Head Coach Rolando Canlas Jr., Coaches Rufelrino Endriano and Chester Uy, and Assistant Coaches Christian Canlas and Alex Ragot.
