UE Junior Athletics Warriors are UAAP Champions Anew!

The UE Red Warriors Athletics Teams showed a strong performance in the recently concluded UAAP 80 Athletics Tournament held on February 7 to 11, 2018, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The UE Juniors’ Athletics Teams swept the championships in the Juniors’ Division. The Boys’ Team are 5-time consecutive champions, while the Girls’ Team emerged as 3-peaters.

The Boys’ Athletics Team won with 550 points. Warrior Trackster James Darrel A. Orduña was awarded as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Mr. Orduña won gold medals in the 3000m steeplechase, 5000m run, 4x400m relay, 1500m run, and the 800m run. Furthermore, he set new UAAP meet records in the 3000m steeplechase, 5000m run, 800m run, 1500m run and the 4x400m relay.

Also winning gold medals were Agem E. Miranda, who also set a new meet record in the UAAP triple jump; Marion Maurice M. Santos, who established a new record in the 3000m walk; and the team of John Loyd H. Osorio, Jerico G. Pacis, Gio L. Gonzales and James Darrel Orduña in the 4x400m relay.

Winning silver medals were Romer E. Magcalayo, who also surpassed the UAAP meet record in the decathlon, and Mico F. Santos, who surpassed the meet record in the 5000m walk.

The Girls’ Team scored a total of 654 points, with Warrior Trackster Ellah Therese G. Sirilan was awarded as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She won gold medals in 4x100m relay, 100m run, 200m run, 400m run, 400m hurdles and 100m hurdles. She, along with her teammates, also set a new meet record in the 4x100m relay.

Fellow Warrior Trackster Jane Marie E. Gochoco was the tournament’s Rookie of the Year. She won a gold medal in the 4x100m relay, where she set a new UAAP meet record, and the 4x400m relay.

Winning gold medals as well were Remalie Jane Magallanes in the 2000m steeplechase, and the teams of Sally S. Callos, Patricia B. Lobos, Ellah Therese Sirilan and Jane Marie Gochoco in the 4x100m relay, and Patricia Lobos, Sally Callos, Jane Marie Gochoco and Irene E. Macalayo in the 4x400m relay. All three individual and team UE gold medalists also set a new UAAP meet record in their respective events.

The UE Seniors’ Athletics Teams also had a solid performance, with the Men’s Team awarded as 1st Runner-up in the Men’s Tournament, while the Women’s Athletics Team landed in 4th Place.

The UE Red Warriors Athletics Teams are under the tutelage of Head Coach Arthur C. Fronda, Assistant Coaches Leo Robert B. Viajar, Gerwin H. Garay and Christopher Balcoba, and Trainers Kenneth Christian Tolin and Ferdinand Miras.
