UE Alumnus Appointed New Chief Justice

The University of the East congratulates UE graduate Lucas P. Bersamin on his appointment as the newest Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines! He is the first UE alumnus to be appointed Chief Justice.

A native of Abra, Chief Justice Bersamin earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the UE College of Law in 1973. He went on to earn 9th Place in the 1973 Bar examination.

He engaged in the practice of law until his appointment as a Presiding Judge of Branch 96 of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court in 1986.

He was appointed by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as a Justice of the Court of Appeals in March 2003. It was also President Arroyo who appointed then Court of Appeals Senior Associate Justice Bersamin to be a magistrate of the Supreme Court in April 2009.

Multi-awarded in the field of law, Chief Justice Bersamin was awarded Best Decision in Civil Law and Best Decision in Criminal Law by the Foundation for Judicial Excellence in the year 2000. The Foundation also handed him the Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos Award for his work as an outstanding RTC Judge in 2002.

In 1991, the UE Alumni Association Inc. gave upon then Judge Bersamin the award of Distinguished Alumnus in Government Service: Judiciary. In 2001, he was recognized as UE’s Outstanding Alumnus in the Field of Law. In 2006, he was feted as one of UE’s 60 Most Outstanding Alumni on the occasion of the University’s 60th Anniversary.

He was UE’s Commencement Speaker of the University’s 12th Midyear Commencement Rites on November 30, 2010, at the PICC Plenary Hall.

Chief Justice Bersamin will serve as the country’s chief magistrate until his 70th birthday on October 18. 2019.
