UE Caloocan Junior High School Students Awarded in Journalism Competition

Two junior high school students from the UE Caloocan Basic Education Department displayed their journalistic prowess by being recognized and awarded in the RACJourn Campus Journalism Contest 2019 last February 16 at the Quezon City High School. The theme of this year’s competition is “RACJourn2019: For the Youth, For the Filipinos” and focuses on “The Role of Campus Journalism in Combating Fake News.”

Grade 10 student Jei Aldrindael Gamboa won first place in the Editorial Writing Competition-English Category with his article regarding the Metro Manila measles outbreak.

Fellow Grade 10 student student Xiaresse Anne Andaya won fifth place in the News Writing Competition-English Category. She wrote a story on Vice President Leni G. Robredo bestowing Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal the Jesse Robredo Leadership Award.

Also competing were Grade 9 student Miguel Andrei Carlos, and Brian Concepcion, Valerie Gamit and Marvin Salada, all Grade 10 students. All six are members of the Junior High School unit of the Junior Dawn, the official student publication of the UE Caloocan Basic Education Department. Acting as their mentor for this competition is Mr. Marc Simon Recto, a faculty member of the JHS-English Unit. the

The RACJourn Campus Journalism Contest is organized by the Rotaract Club of Campus Scholars of the Rotary Club of Downtown Manila, with the goal of enhancing aspiring young writers’ skills in journalism and stressing the importance of campus journalism in combatting fake news in different media platforms.
