The University of the East is set to confer the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, upon Hon. Lucas P. Bersamin, the recently retired 25th Chief Justice of the Philippines. The conferment ceremony will be held on November 12, 2019, 2 p.m., at the UE Conference Hall.

Chief Justice Bersamin, a native of Bangued, Abra, earned his law degree from the UE College of Law in 1973. He earned 9th Place in the 1973 Bar Examinations, attaining a score of 100% in Criminal Law.

He went on to render an active practice of law from 1974 onwards until his appointment to the Regional Trial Court on November 5, 1986, as the Presiding Judge of Branch 96 of the RTC in Quezon City. Hon. Bersamin authored the 413-page Appeal and Review in the Philippines, whose second edition was published in 2000.

In 2000, the Chief Justice Fred Ruiz Castro Memorabilia Commission recognized him for rendering the Best Decision in Civil Law and the Best Decision in Criminal Law among RTC Judges in 1999―the only time that the same judge earned both awards in the same year. In 2002, he won the Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos Award as Outstanding RTC Judge, given by the Foundation for Judicial Excellence.

On March 10, 2003, Hon. Bersamin was appointed to the Court of Appeals, of which he was a member until being appointed as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines on April 2, 2009. Before joining the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Bersamin was active in the academe, teaching at the UE College of Law and other universities. He lectured in various law review centers, and was a resource person in the continuing legal education programs of the UP Law Center-Institute of Judicial Administration and the Philippine Judicial Academy.

On November 28, 2018, he was appointed as Chief Justice, serving as such until his compulsory retirement on October 17, 2019. As such, he was the Chairperson of the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, after having alternated as a Member of the Senate Electoral Tribunal and as a Member of the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal.

Chief Justice Bersamin was one of UE’s 60 Most Outstanding Alumni Awardees, during the University’s first diamond jubilee, on September 25, 2006. He is set to become the University’s 18th recipient of an honorary UE law degree, UE’s 12th alumnus to receive an honorary UE degree, and 34th recipient overall of an honorary UE degree. He is the first ever UE graduate to become Chief Justice of the Philippines.
