UE Athletes, Coaches Win 13 SEA Games 2019 Medals for the Philippines!

Congratulations to the 18 UE students and alumni athletes and coaches who contributed to the Philippines’ resounding overall championship and impressive 387-medal haul in the recently concluded 30th Southeast Asian Games! SEAG 2019 was hosted by and held in the Philippines in various venues from November 30 to December 11, 2019.

UE’s Red Warrior athletes won a total of 13 SEAG 2019 medals: three golds, two silvers and eight bronze medals. These medals were won in Men’s and Women’s Fencing, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Kurash, Women’s Judo and Men’s Tennis.

UE’s athletes won big in fencing, taking home nine medals during the SEAG Fencing Tournament.

In the individual fencing events, Jylyn Nicanor, a Bachelor of Science major in Psychology alumna from the UE College of Arts and Sciences-Manila, won the gold medal in the Women’s Individual Saber event, while UE Manila Grade 12 student Samantha Kyle Catantan took home the bronze in Women’s Individual Foil. Christian Jhester Concepcion, a 4th-year Bachelor of Arts, major in International Studies student at the UE CAS Manila, won the Men’s Individual Saber silver medal. UE College of Business Administration-Manila Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, major in Financial Management graduate and former UAAP Most Valuable Player Nathaniel Perez won the Men’s Individual Foil bronze medal. Mr. Concepcion and Mr. Perez are also Junior High School graduates of the UE Basic Education Department-Manila.

In the team fencing events, Mickyle Rein Bustos, who received her Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management degree from UE CAS Manila at our 21st Midyear Commencement Rites last December 5, was part of the team that won the gold medal in Women’s Team Epee. With Ms. Bustos as gold medalists were Harlene Raguin, Anna Estimada and Hannah Abella.

Ms. Nicanor, and 4th-year UE BS in Tourism Management student Allaine Nicole Cortey and 4th-year UE AB major in International Studies student Queen Denise Dalmacio, together with Kimberly Camahalan, won the bronze medal in Women’s Team Saber.

Mr. Concepcion and Eric Brando, a Master in Business Administration alumnus from the UE Graduate School, together with Donnie Arth Navarro and Eunice Daniel Villanueva, also won the bronze medal in Men’s Team Saber.

Ms. Catantan, UE BS in Tourism Management graduate Wilhelmina Lozada and Justine Gail Tinio, a Bachelor of Secondary Education, major in MAPEH graduate from the UE College of Education, together with Maxine Esteban, won the bronze medal in Women’s Team Foil. Both Ms. Lozada and Ms. Tinio are Junior High School graduates of UE Basic Ed.-Manila.

Mr. Perez, UE BS in Hotel and Restaurant Management-Manila alumnus Michael Nicanor and UE Manila Grade 10 student Shawn Nicollei Felipe, together with Jaime Isidro Viceo won the bronze medal in Men’s Team Foil.

The Philippine Fencing Team was led by UE champion Fencing Coach Rolando Canlas Jr. Coach Canlas himself is a UE CEduc alumnus and a SEA Games 2005 gold medalist.

UE BSBA major in Business Management graduate Eunique Chan is part of the team which won the gold medal in the SEAG 2019 Women’s Basketball Tournament. Ms. Chan is also a Junior High School graduate of the UE Basic Ed. Department-Manila.

Serving as the Women’s Basketball Team Assistant Coach is UE Red Warriors Women’s Basketball Team Head Coach Aileen Lebornio.

UE CEduc Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics graduate Bianca Mae Estrella won the silver medal in the 70kg. category in the SEAG 2019 Women’s Kurash Tournament.

In judo, UE Red Warriors Women’s Judo Team captain Ma. Jeanalane Lopez, a UE CBA Manila BSBA major in Business Management graduate and a current Master in Business Administration student at the UE Graduate School, won the bronze medal in the 52kg category.

In Men’s Tennis, former UE CBA Manila BSBA major in Business Management student Alberto Lim Jr., copped the bronze medal in the Singles event.
