Congratulations to the Bangketa Eskwela Foundation for winning Third Place in the Outstanding Project Category of the IGNITEMNL2019 Awards. The awarding was held at the IgniteMNL2019 Summit last Saturday, December 14, 2019, at the Far Eastern University Auditorium in Sampaloc, Manila.

Organized by the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI)-Philippines, the IgniteMNL2019 Awards aims to recognize school-based or community-based youth-led organizations focusing on economic management, education, environment protection or civic management.

Brigada Eskwela Foundation (BEF) was founded by UE College of Education graduate Dara Mae H. Tuazon from her personal advocacy of sharing knowledge and imparting wisdom to others, especially the less fortunate youth. BEF traces its roots to 2017, when Ms. Tuazon, then a second-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) student of UE CEduc, informally taught street kids along Gastambide Street.

Today, Ms. Tuazon sits as the President-Founder of BEF, which has become a full-fledged foundation with several volunteers who teach street children in various areas of Manila, and has since expanded to her native province of Pampanga. Aside from literacy programs, BEF also conducts the distribution of hygiene kits, feeding programs, dental missions and parenting seminars.

For her humanitarian efforts and advocacy, Ms. Tuazon has received numerous recognitions. She is the first ever Grand Champion of The One Philippines (TOP) Humanitarian Award, which was conferred upon her in May 2018. As the TOP Grand Champion, she also represented the Philippines as an automatic semi-finalist in The One International Humanitarian Award, held in May 2019 in Hong Kong. She was also awarded as the Outstanding Fernandino in Youth Services by her hometown of San Fernando, Pampanga, in February 2019. In July 2019, she was one of the Bayaning Kabataang Pilipino Award national finalists under the 15th Gawad Geny Lopez Bayaning Pilipino Awards.

Ms. Tuazon received her BEEd degree from the University at UE’s 21st Midyear Commencement Rites held just last December 5, 2019, at the PICC Plenary Hall.

Mr. Tomas M. Tanchanco sits as BEF Vice President, while Ms. Ruth Legaspi is the Foundation’s Secretary. Ms. Tuazon’s mother, UE Basic Education Department-Manila Junior High School Faculty Member Amparo H. Tuazon is BEF’s Treasurer. Mrs, Diane G. Rodriguez is the Executive Director, while Dara Mae’s father, Mr. Joseph Tuazon, sits as a Member of the BEF Board of Trustees.

Mrs. Rodriguez is with the UE Manila Guidance, Counseling and Career Services Office, serving as the UE Basic Education Department-Manila Guidance Counselor. She is likewise a UE graduate, having earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree from the UE College of Arts and Sciences-Manila in 2003, and her Master of Arts in Education, Major in Guidance and Counseling degree from the UE Graduate School in 2011.
