UE Caloocan Set to Honor Former VP De Castro, ‘24 Oras’ via Gawad Bagani 2020

In pursuit of acknowledging the modern heroes of radio and television, the University of the East-Caloocan, through the UE College of Arts and Sciences-Caloocan (CAS Caloocan) and in cooperation with the UE Office of the Extension and Community Outreach (OECO), will be honoring the latest awardees of its Gawad Bagani sa Komunikasyon. The program, the sixth in all to date, will be held this Wednesday, February 12, 2020, 1:30 p.m., at Multipurpose Hall 3 of the Dr. Lucio C. Tan Building in UE Caloocan.

This year’s Gawad Bagani program will confer two awards. The first, the title of Bagani TV Broadcaster, will be awarded to UE graduate and former Philippine Vice President Manuel “Noli” De Castro Jr., for his work as anchor of the ABS-CBN primetime news program “TV Patrol.” The second Gawad Bagani 2020 award, for the title of Best TV Program for Public Service, will be conferred upon the GMA primetime newscast “24 Oras”.

Launched in 2014, UE Caloocan’s Gawad Bagani sa Komunikasyon is a community service project which “aims to celebrate the impact of media among ordinary people in selected barangays in the cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela (CAMANAVA).” It recognizes and appreciates “warriors” in popular media “who fight against social injustice rooted in poverty as manifested in unemployment, illiteracy, illness and powerlessness.”

Among UE’s previous Gawad Bagani winners are Ms. Jessica Soho (Television, 2014), Ms. Vicky Morales (TV, 2016), Ms. Kara David (TV, 2015); Mr. Julius Babao and Ms. Kaye Dacer, as anchors on DZMM Teleradyo (2016); Ms. Mel Tiangco (TV, 2016 and 2018); Mr. Arnold Clavio (TV, 2015 and 2018); and the First Gawad Bagani Hall of Famer, Mr. Mike Enriquez (TV, 2014 to 2017).

UE President Ester A. Garcia, UE Caloocan Chancellor Zosimo M. Battad, OECO Director Rogelio I. Espiritu, UE Graduate School Dean Julian A. Abuso and UE CAS Caloocan Dean Jean C. Tayag will present the awards to the honorees.

Among the performers at Gawad Bagani 2020 is Mr. Roel Angelo R. Rostata, an April 2014 Bachelor of Arts in Communication graduate of UE CAS Caloocan. Mr. Rostata is the composer of “Bagani,” the Gawad Bagani theme song. The song, originally composed in 2014, is a contender in the Philippine Popular Music Festival (Philpop) Songwriting Contest, following Mr. Rostata’s having been a fellow of the Philpop’s Songwriting Bootcamp held on May 27 to 30, 2019, in Batangas.
