UE Girls’ Fencing Team Marks UAAP 9-peat as Fencing Champs!

The UE Red Warriors Girls’ Fencing Team once again dominated in their UAAP tournament, this time through the Season 82 Girls’ Fencing Tournament held on February 11 to 14. 2020, at the Paco Arena in Manila!

The nine-peat-winning female junior Warrior Fencers amassed nine UAAP 82 medals, sweeping all six gold medals in the individual and team events, as well as winning all three silver medals in the individual events.

Samantha Kyle Catantan, who is Pennsylvania State University-bound for her college studies, capped her UAAP career with her fifth Most Valuable Player award. Ms. Catantan won gold medals in Individual Foil and Individual Saber, and was part of the teams that won the gold in Team Foil and Team Saber.

Margarette Eliah Gervacio and Adriane Lising were both hailed as the tournament’s Rookies of the Year. Ms. Gervacio was among the team members that won the Team Foil gold, while Ms. Lising was in the team that won the Team Saber gold. Joining MVP Catantan and Ms. Lising in the Team Saber event were Angel Francess Beltran and Lizalyn Mae Sarez.

Andrea Jannelle Matias won the Individual Epee gold medal.

Maricar Matienzo, Angel Francess Beltran and Jaymi Delos Santos all won silver medals—in Individual Foil, Individual Saber and Individual Epee, respectively.

Eytria Olarte and Maricar Matienzo joined MVP Catantan and Ms. Gervacio in winning the gold medal in the Team Foil event.

The team of Andrea Jannelle Matias, Jaymi Delos Santos, Kollen Hygeia Moreno and Cyrylle Anne Schofield, for their part, won the Team Epee gold.

The UE Red Warriors Girls’ Fencing Team is under the mentorship of Head Coach Rolando Canlas Jr., Coaches Rufel Endriano and Chester Uy, and Assistant Coaches Christian Canlas and Alex Ragot.
