One of four groups of Doctor of Dental Medicine students of the UE College of Dentistry won Third Prize at the recently concluded Southeast Asian Association for Dental Education (SEAADE) 2019!
UE CDent students have been participants in recent SEAADE scientific meetings and this year, SEAADE’s 30th annual scientific meeting in all, was no different. A total of 20 UE CDent students comprising four groups in all made a total of four research poster presentations at SEAADE 2019, which was held on August 5-7, 2019, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia―at the International Medical University on August 5 and at the Connexion Conference & Event Centre (CCEC) on August 6 and 7.
Under the SEAADE 2019 theme of “Reimagining Dental Education,” the participating UE CDent students joined the Student Challenge Research Poster Competition. There were 12 group competitors from various countries, and one of UE’s four groups went on to win 3rd Prize.
The winning UE CDent-based research was on “Accuracy of 3D-Printed Working Casts Compared to Conventionally-made Working Casts” by Team 3D Printing. The team was composed of (in alphabetical order) Josefina Mikaella S. Bonnevie, Danelle Louise D. Buhain (also the group’s presenter), Eunice Franz G. Divinagracia, Mary Diane A. Garcia, Jasmin Joy E. Guevarra and Raddolfe Bryle T. Salamat.
The three other UE CDent paper presentations included “Active Bacteriostatic Effect and 18-hour Effectivity of 2% Annonamuricata on Dental Biofilm” by Team Guyabano: Pompeyo B. Castro III, Erwin G. Mejia II and Joyce Angelique R. Ramos.
Team Grapeseed’s paper, “The Effect of Different Concentrations of Vitsvinifera Seed Extract on Dental Biofilm Formation,” was by Kristina Harissa R. De Lara, Maria Camille H. Espin, Denise Angela D. Guia, Aira B. Jimenez, Charisse Peirylle S. Paguyo and Christian Joie V. Terrenal.
The paper on “Healing Effect of Live Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota in Excisional Wound of the Nape of Sprague Dawley Rats” was by Team Probiotic’s Kathy Mae V. Bautista, Nikki B. Ferrer, Moira Kate P. Jaen, Joemala C. Maano and Ma. Clarisse Franchesca R. Moral.
The UE CDent Dean, Dr. Rhodora H. Luciano, joined the UE students at SEAADE 2019. Dr. Blesilda K. Formantes, the UE CDent Associate Dean, was the Adviser of all four research teams.
All of the participating students are UE DMD seniors, and were the only Filipino students in the semifinal and final rounds of the poster presentation competition.
The semifinal round saw Teams 3D Printing, Guyabano and Grapeseed alongside two groups from Brunei and one from Singapore. Team Probiotic’s research paper was not a semifinalist yet popular demand among SEAADE delegates led to the team presenting its research at the semifinal round.
Ultimately sharing Top 3 places with UE and the Philippines were the representative student group of Singapore (1st Place) and one group from Brunei (2nd Place).
Congratulations and kudos, Dentistry Warriors!
