The University of the East—through the UE Manila-based College of Computer Studies and Systems (UE CCSS) and the College of Engineering-Caloocan (UE CEng’g Cal.)—will offer a brand new degree program starting in the first semester of school year 2021-2022: Bachelor of Science in Data Science (BSDS)!
The UE Bachelor of Science in Data Science program will cover the study of data and methodologies, processes, algorithms, and systems for collecting, refining, storing and analyzing data to arrive at useful insights and knowledge. Data Science is a discipline in computing that benefits from developments in computer science, mathematics, statistics, business, and other disciplines.
UE’s BSDS students would be knowledgeable and skilled in processing, management and analysis of data in various forms. They are envisioned to be competent, innovative, creative and responsible problem-solvers who can contribute to nation-building. As such, BSDS graduates can assume any of the following professions, among others: Data Scientist, Data Analyst, Qualitative Analyst, Big Data Analyst, Research and Development Computing Professional, Systems Analyst, Data Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, Big Data Developer, and Data Quality Assurance Specialist.
A fairly fresh yet socially relevant field of endeavor, data science is an interdisciplinary field that can make learners understand the world in an objective way and utilize this understanding to foster progress. The UE BSDS program can concretely contribute to the development of society, with its graduates expected to extract and use applied data to make their work go faster and farther, and thus help businesses maximize profit—while creating new communities and promising careers and opportunities across all industry sectors. Data science, in general, can help solve social problems through close coordination and work across sectors to take on real-world problems in education, energy, transportation, safety, international development, economic development health, and more.
