The University of the East is one with the nation in marking Privacy Awareness Week, an annual event that will highlight the importance of protecting personal information, this last week of May 2021.
Spearheaded by the National Privacy Commission, the theme of this year’s observance is “Valuing Privacy in the Time of Digital Transformation: Protecting Filipinos. Promoting Economic Recovery. Building Trust.”
As citizens shift to a more online day-to-day environment in these times, it is vital that the proper controls are in place to ensure that personal information is protected and not abused.
UE, as declared in its Privacy Statement, adheres to Republic Act 10173 or the Data Privacy Act of 2012. The University has instituted policies in safeguarding the data it collects, stores, uses, shares and disposes for official purposes from its stakeholders, such as students, faculty members, non-teaching personnel and service providers.
As part of its data privacy policy, the University has been taking the following steps to ensure that data collected from its stakeholders are protected:
1. Collection: UE collects submitted personal information when necessary through its various academic and administrative offices, either through hard copy or electronic format.
2. Use: UE uses such personal information to carry out its legitimate functions as an academic institution.
3. Sharing: Personal information may be shared with other agencies/organizations as mandated by law or to carry out processes to deliver quality education. No personal information may be shared without prior consent from the individual stakeholders.
4. Storage: Personal information is stored by UE in a secure manner, either in hard copy or electronic format as long as needed.
5. Disposal: The University shall dispose of personal information in a secure manner, once the purpose for collecting the said data has been attained.
Furthermore, the University respects the rights of its stakeholders as data subjects in terms of being able (1) to be informed of the purpose of the data collected; (2) to have access to their own information; (3) to object to the collection of their data; (4) to erase or block access to their data; (5) to file a data privacy-related complaint; (6) to rectify supplied data; and (7) to enjoy data portability.
