Three members of the overall UE Red Warriors Fencing Team showed an outstanding performance in the World Fencing Championships Juniors and Cadets, which were held on April 1 to 9, 2018, at the Cattolica Sport Society headquarters in Verona, Italy.

The Warrior Fencers, as part of the nine-man Philippine Team, competed against fencers from various countries such as Japan, USA, Italy, Latvia, Egypt, Venezuela, Thailand, Croatia, Austrialia, New Zealand and Ireland.

Most notably, Samantha Kyle Catantan of the UE Red Warriors Girls’ Fencing Team finished at rank number 26 out of 115 in the under-17 division of the Women’s Foil Tournament—the highest rank ever achieved by a Filipino in the competition.

Ms. Catantan who is the UAAP Season 80 Girls’ Fencing MVP and has just been awarded UAAP 80 Scholar Athlete of the Year this week, also ranked 40th out of 141 fencers in the under-20 division of the Women’s Foil Tournament.

Prior to the tournament, Ms. Catantan completed her Grade 10 studies at the UE Basic Education Department-Manila. She was a recipient of High Honors and of the Sports Excellence Award.

Her fellow Warrior fencer, Maricar Matienzo of our Girls’ Fencing Team, ranked 115th out of 140 in the under-20 Women’s Foil Tournament.

Another Warrior fencer, Samuel Tranquilan of the UE Men’s Fencing Team, ranked 142nd out 189 in the under-20 Men’s Foil Tournament. Mr. Tranquilan is the UAAP 80 Men’s Fencing Tournament MVP.

The Philippine Fencing Team in the World Fencing Championship Juniors and Cadets was mentored by UE’s champion Coach Rolando Canlas.
