UE Red Warriors Meet New Head Coach Jack Santiago

The UE Red Warriors Men’s Basketball Team has landed a new Head Coach in Mr. Gerardo “Jack” Santiago, who met with the team’s players this Monday, January 20, 2020, at Gym 5 in UE Manila.

Accompanying Coach Santiago in meeting the players were UE President and Chief Academic Officer Ester A. Garcia and Department of Physical Education Director Rodrigo M. Roque.

An Industrial Engineering graduate of the then Mapúa Institute of Technology, Coach Santiago was the Assistant Coach of the De La Salle Green Archers for 10 years, in the Philippine Basketball Association for three years for the Air21 team, and most recently for the Adamson Falcons for the last four years.

Today also marks Coach Santiago’s return of sorts to UE, specifically to the UE Gym, recalling that “We used to practice here back when I was a member of the Asia Overseas Transport team under Coach Roehl Nadurata in the 1989 season of the Philippine Amateur Basketball League.”

In meeting the team, Coach Santiago complimented the Warriors for being aggressive in their games in the recently concluded UAAP 82 men’s basketball tournament and expressed the aim of having a good relationship with the red-and-white players, for all of them to be “on the same page.” As such, he assures the team that he is open to questions that they may have throughout the foreseeable future, especially in these next seven months before UAAP 83 begins.

For her part, President Garcia reminded the Warriors to be mindful of their studies while giving their best as athletes, due to the academic requirements of UE and the UAAP alike, and, moreover, given the fact that having a degree opens more doors than being great players alone.

Looking ahead, Coach Santiago, who is in his early fifties and an incumbent Councilor of his native Navotas City, is looking forward to getting to know the Warriors individually and collectively, to know their skills and attitudes, and to focusing on the team’s pressure-defense potential while also ensuring that they are flexible and that their respective capabilities are maximized.

As he marks this first ever stint as head coach throughout his roughly two-decade basketball career, Coach Jack expresses

gratitude to the University, saying “Thank you for the chance to be part of the UE community.”

Welcome to UE, Coach Jack Santiago! Go fight, Red and White! GO FIGHT, RED AND WHITE!
