UE marks record-setting feat in UAAP Fencing competition

The University of the East (UE) demonstrated once again its Fencing mastery as UE ruled the University Athletic Association of Philippines (UAAP) Season 75 men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ Fencing Competition, winning all the divisions’ crowns, at the Philsports Arena, Pasig City, Dec. 11 to 14.

The UE Lady Warrior-fencers successfully defended the fencing championship to chalk up its seventh consecutive UAAP title in the women’s division. In the men’s division, the UE Red Warriors snapped its three-year title drought, to regain the title, annexing its eight title. The UE Junior Warriors succeeded in defending their title for three consecutive UAAP seasons now while the UE Girl Warriors made the fencing championship in their division for two consecutive seasons. Todate, UE has accumulated 20 Fencing championship titles for all the divisions in a span of 13 seasons. According to UE Warrior-Fencers’ Coach Rolando Canlas, Jr., UE is the only school todate to accomplish 20 championship titles in the UAAP Fencing competition. “We came fully prepared to compete. This is a record-setting feat for us,” said Canlas.

In addition, the UE fencers won all the divisions’ major individual awards: Men’s division – Nathaniel M. Perez, Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Rookie of the Year, for his four Gold medals in individual Epee and Foil, and team Foil and Epee; Women’s division – Justine Gail D. Tinio, MVP and Rookie of the Year, for her three Gold medals in individual Foil and the team Epee and Foil; Boy’s division – Francois Nowell Licono, MVP, for his three Gold medals in individual Foil and team’s Foil and Saber, and Samuel L. Tranquilan, Rookie of the Year, for his Gold medal in the team Foil; Girl’s division –  Divine P. Romero, MVP, for her five gold medals in individual Epee and Foil, and the team Epee, Foil and Saber, and Mickyle Rein Bustos, Rookie of the Year, or her Gold medal in the team Epee and Bronze in individual Epee.
