Two Warrior Championships and a Runner-up Title in UAAP 78 Taekwondo!

Congratulations to everyone in the UE Red Warriors Taekwondo Team for their very stellar performance in the recently concluded UAAP Season 78 Taekwondo Tournament!

The tournament was held on October 13, 15, 21 and 23, 2015 at the Blue Eagle Gym of Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City.

The UE Taekwondo Juniors’ Team scored a three-peat by winning the championship in Juniors’ Tournament for the third year in a row, this time by sweeping all five of its UAAP 78 matches. John Shadrach Tan was also heralded as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

The Lady Warrior Jins likewise emerged as champion, captured their first ever UAAP women’s taekwondo championship by sweeping all six of their UAAP 78 games. Per the UAAP press corps, the Lady Warriors downed NU, 5-2, and Far Eastern University, 4-3, in the final day to cap a dominant campaign. Baby Jessica Canabal was awarded Rookie of the Year, while teammate Karen Cells was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Winning gold medals in their respective divisions were Karen Cells (finweight), Baby Jessica Canapal (flyweight) and Darlene Mae Arpon (featherweight). Nicole Ann McCann (lightweight) won a silver medal while Angie Dayag (bantamweight) won a bronze medal.

The Men’s Taekwondo Team for its part bagged the tournament’s 1st Runner-Up title. The Warriors wound up at 5-1 after a 4-3 decision over the Bulldogs, but the Recto-based jins lost the chance of winning their first-ever men’s title by virtue of winner-over-the-other rule, which went in favor of UST. Warrior Frasser Tahil (lightweight) won the team’s lone medal, while Deniel Kyle Buan (featherweight), Cris Paul John Mirasol (midweight), King Philip Pineda (flyweight) and Jenar Torillos (bantamweight) all won silver medals. Jean Nigel Buan (finweight) won the team’s lone bronze medal.

The UE Red Warriors Taekwondo Team are under Coaches Jeffrey Figueroa, Maurice Adrian Ronario, Anthony John Samia and Joenel Rendora.

Good job, Warrior Jins! Go Fight, Red and White! GO FIGHT, RED AND WHITE!
