Warrior Fencers Lunge to Victory at 18th ASEAN University Games

Congratulations to the members of the UE Red Warriors Fencing Team who, as part of the Philippine fencing team, won big for the country in the recently concluded 18th ASEAN University Games Fencing Tournament! The games were held on July 14 to 17, 2016 at the National University of Singapore.

The Philippine team, composed of 12 student-fencers from UE along with five from the University of Santo Tomas (UST), two from De La Salle University (DLSU) and one from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), amassed 10 medals: three gold, two silver and five bronze medals.

Among the medalists are Warrior Fencers Nathaniel Perez, who won the gold medal in Men’s Individual Foil; Michael Nicanor, bronze medal in Men’s Individual Foil; Justine Gail Tinio, silver medal in Women’s Individual Foil; and Christian Jhester Concepcion, bronze medal in Men’s Individual Saber.

In the team competitions, the team of Warrior Fencers Justine Gail Tinio, Wilhelmina Lozada, Jylyn Nicanor and UST fencer Day Peñaflor scored the gold medal in Women’s Team Foil. The team comprised by UE Fencers Lee Eigran Ergina and Jancel Concepcion, Joshua Rodriguez from DLSU and Noel Jose from UST won the gold medal in Men’s Team Epee.

UE Fencers Nathaniel Perez, Michael Nicanor, Sammuel Tranquilan and Jancel Concepcion won the silver medal in the Men’s Team Foil. Finally, the team of UE’s Nicole Cortey, UST’s Maylene Pailma and Kim Camahalan, and ADMU’s Justine Joseph took home the bronze medal in Women’s Team Saber.

The Philippine fencing team at this year’s 18th ASEAN University Games was under the helm of the UE Red Warriors Fencing Team’s Champion Coaches Rolando Canlas and Chester Uy, and Coach Almario Vizcayno from DLSU.
