UE CFAD Professor-Filmmaker’s Short Film Wins Viewers’ Choice in Jamaica Film Festival

“Pipo,” a short film by UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (CFAD) Professor Richard Soriano Legaspi won the Viewers’ Choice Award during the Asian and Middle Eastern Film Night of the Gatffest Film Festival last June 24, 2017 in Kingston, Jamaica.

The 20-minute film, which revolves around a little boy’s desire to have his family picture taken, features Maliksi Morales, Lou Veloso and Chanel Latorre. It was shown alongside entries from Israel, Malaysia, Iran, Afghanistan, Singapore and Taiwan.

Prof. Legaspi is a 2000 graduate of Bachelor of Fine Arts, major in Advertising Arts of the then UE College of Fine Arts in UE Caloocan where he also has been teaching. He is a fellow of the Asian Film Academy in Busan, South Korea where he trained under renowned Asian filmmakers Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Pen-Ek Ratanaruang. He was also selected as one of the UNESCO-Aschberg Laureate Artists of 2013, a scholarship program that offers residencies to artists worldwide. He took his residency in the UNIDEE (University of Ideas) Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella, Italy.

He has 14 films under his belt, the latest of which is “Pipo,” released in 2015. His 2007 film Ambulancia, earned the Miglior Montaggio Award at the San Gio Film Festival and was a Dubai International Film Festival. His first full-length film “Paano Ko Sasabihin?” starring Erich Gonzales and Enchong Dee won the Special Jury Prize, Audience Award and Best Editing in the 2009 Cinema One Originals and was a finalist in the at the Babel Film Festival in Italy. His 2011 short film “Manenaya” won the Jury Prize in that year’s Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and was the opening film at the 2012 Asiatica Film Mediale in Rome, Italy.

According to its website, Gatffest, introduced in 2013 as the Greater August Town Film Festival, was organized by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Center for Tourism and Policy Research and aims to serve as a platform for new and emerging filmmakers to showcase their talents.
