sokaThe University of the East (UE), Japan’s Soka University (SU) and Soka Gakkai International Philippines (SGI Phils.) will be launching this month the 1st Ikeda Symposium, the theme of which shall be “Harnessing the Values of Peace for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth.”

Former Supreme Court of the Philippines Chief Justice Hilario G. Davide Jr. will be the symposium’s guest of honor and inaugural speaker. The former Chief Justice will tackle “Peace: The Key to Full Human and Global Development, Progress, Security and Stability.”

The 1st Ikeda Symposium has been envisioned as a venue for discourse in realizing the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs), as inspired by Dr. Ikeda’s philosophy, values and teachings in line with developing a culture of peace. Through the philosophy of Dr. Ikeda, the Symposium aims to gather academic leaders from international and local higher education institutions in the promotion of peace and fulfillment of prosperity through academic discourse.

As Dr. Ikeda had emphasized, a truly peaceful society is one in which everyone can maximize their potential to lead fulfilling lives free from threats to their dignity, with peace as both a means and an end to the achievement of sustainable development and inclusive growth. And as Dr. Zosimo M. Battad, UE Caloocan Chancellor and the Co-Chair of the First Ikeda Symposium, puts it, “The importance of peace, justice and humanism in society, especially at this time, could not be overemphasized.”
