A group of Senior High School students from the UE Basic Education Department-Manila were declared the champion of the senior high school competition of Animafest 2019: An Interschool Short Animated Film Competition during its awarding ceremony last January 26, 2019 at the Adamson University Theater in Ermita, Manila.

The team of Jose Rafael Zarate, Daniel Bruza and Amiel John Pinauin, all Grade 12 TVL-Information and Communication Technology Strand students, and Paoline Yap, a Grade 12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Strand student, all worked to produce their entry “Pahimakas (Farewell).” The animated short tells the story of an OFW mother’s dream that was shattered one unfortunate night. Mr. Zarate served as the film’s director with the story written by Ms. Yap. Mr. Bruza served as the animator, with Mr. Pinauin as the editor. Acting as the group’s mentors are Prof. Dannah May Ramos and Prof. Vina Marie Suyu, both UE Manila TVL-ICT faculty members.

The contest was organized by Adamson University as a way for senior high school and college students to showcase their talents and skills in graphics and animation. The event also served as the first foray of the UE SHS Manila into animation competitions. There were ten senior high schools, including the UE SHS Manila, competing in the senior high school division of the competition.

According to Ms. Ramos, they submitted “Pahimakas” to the competition in December 2018, and was updated in early January that they were shortlisted to be a part of the finalists. During the finals night last January 26, the films were screened once again before the winners in both the senior high school and college levels were awarded. The Warrior Filmmakers and Animators emerged as champion in the SHS competition, with STI Lucena and Arellano University coming in at 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

In addition to champion, the group also won Best Story for their entry.

They won a trophy, certificates and a cash prize of P5,000 for their feat.
