UE Paper on Sustainability Concept Presented at 1st ASEAN Bamboo Congress

A study made by a team based at the UE College of Engineering-Caloocan was recently presented at the 1st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Bamboo Congress for Climate Change Adaptation towards Environmental Sustainability and Economic Resiliency held on August 12 to 16, 2019, at the Iloilo Convention Center in Iloilo City, Philippines.

Organized by the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) of the country’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), this maiden ASEAN congress on bamboo, which has been dubbed as the “green gold,” had delegates from several countries, including India, Peru, Sweden, China and the United States of America.

The UE study, one of a few that represented the Philippines at the event, was on “Bamboo as Reinforcement for Concrete,” which belonged to the Congress’ subtheme 4 on recent advances in “Bamboo R&D and Policy.”

Presenting for the UE team was Engr. Eduardo B. Leron Jr., a December 2012 Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering graduate, Cum Laude, of UE CEng’g Caloocan who has gone on to become a BSCE faculty member of the College as well as Adviser to UE Caloocan’s Central Student Council (CSC) and Business Manager of the North Metro Manila Chapter of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE).

Engr. Leron co-authored the study with four of his past thesis advisees turned April 2019 BSCE graduates of UE CEng’g Caloocan, namely (in alphabetical order) John Crypton Adato, Ian Neil Agustin, Randy Bellen and Ainard Pasion. The UE team’s research focused on the strength and workability of bamboo as reinforcement for concrete.

Their study was on display along with others presented at the Congress’s exhibit.

Engr. Leron is seen in the photos here at the 1st ASEAN Bamboo Congress exhibit; with the DENR-ERDB Assistant Director, For. Mayumi Quintos-Natividad; and with fellow presenters and officials (foreground, from left) Mr. Red Francisco Milla Jr. of DENR Region VI, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu, International Bamboo and Rattan Organsation (INBAR) Global Programme Director Bryan Cohen, ERDB Director Dr. Sofio B. Quinatana and Congress Coordinator Angelito B. Exconde of the ERDB.

Earlier this year, Engr. Leron was a resource speaker at the recently concluded 2019 National Midyear Convention and Technical Conference of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE), held last June at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City and the CAP Convention Center in Davao City. He presented a research paper on another sustainability study, on “Innovative Construction Reinforcement Medium Using Crushed Glass: An Experimental Risk-Waste Reduction Research,” which he co-authored with another group of UE CEng’g Caloocan BSCE students, most of whom also graduated from UE last April.

Kudos, Civil Engineering and Sustainability Warriors!
