The University community mourns the loss of Prof. Carolyn De Guzman-Castillo, a former professor at the College of Business Administration-Manila, who passed away on October 9, 2026, at 69 years old.

Known as Carol to her friends and colleagues, Prof. Castillo taught and, for a time, was the Department Chair in the Finance, Economics and Mathematics (FECOMATH) Department of the College and served UE from 1981 until her mandatory retirement in 2022. In 2021, she was a 30-year service awardee during the virtual University Service Awards during UE’s 75th Foundation Anniversary.

Her wake is at the Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapel, St. Vincent Parish, Tandang Sora, Quezon City. While the wake is up to October 14, her cremation is on October 12, 2026.

An experimental short film produced as a class activity by the 𝗨𝗘 𝗖𝗙𝗔𝗗 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱–𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 has been 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 at the 𝟭𝟳𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 (𝗜𝗜𝗨𝗦𝗙𝗙) in Bangladesh. The film earned this recognition among 1,269 entries from around the world. The festival was held from September 21 to 23, 2026, marking a significant international achievement for the student filmmakers of the University of the East College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (UE CFAD).

Titled “𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵,” the six-minute experimental film was directed by Rafael Kiedis Ocampo, Airish Tayag, and Roniel Icasiano. Inspired by the Kuleshov Effect, the film brings together three interconnected works that weave together fragments of everyday life, memory, and imagination. It explores how meaning is shaped not only by images but also by the spaces, pauses, and silences between them, inviting audiences to consider how context can transform perception.

Together, the three films form a collective narrative—an experiment in seeing, feeling, and interpreting truth as something fluid, constructed, and shared. What makes this achievement particularly meaningful is that “Assembled Truth” was, in essence, a whole-class project. It represents a unique milestone in which the BFA Visual Communication Batch 2025–2026 collectively became part of an international film festival selection.

Three separate short films developed as class projects were assembled into one collective work and subsequently submitted to international film festivals. The project was developed and supervised under the tutelage of Asst. Prof. Richard Soriano Legaspi, a faculty member of UE CFAD and Curator of the Chua King Ha Galleries.

Rather than being the work of only a small production team, “Assembled Truth” reflects the shared creative process of an entire class, bringing together different perspectives, ideas, skills, and contributions into one cinematic work.

Over the years, IIUSFF has evolved into a platform where diverse young voices from across the globe are given opportunities to be heard, represented, and celebrated.

The partnership also marked the launch of UE’s SDG Global Roadmap Readiness Plan, supporting the University’s efforts to promote sustainability awareness and climate education within the UE Community.

The MOU signing was attended by UE President and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Zosimo M. Battad; Dean Rogelio Aniez; OIL Director Darwin M. Guianan; Ms. Ina Alleco R. Silverio, Climate Education Lead Board Member of WeGeneration Initiative; Mr. Charlito S. Ayco, Chairman of the Board; and Ms. Christianne Santos, Executive Director.

A new international learning experience began for 𝗠𝘀. 𝗚𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝘇, 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗖𝗔𝗦 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮, who arrived at 𝗦𝗼𝗸𝗮 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝗸𝘆𝗼, 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻, on September 1, 2026, for a 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲.

During her exchange, Geanna took courses under the Faculty of Liberal Arts, along with Nihongo classes, as part of her international academic experience.

Prior to her departure, the Office for International Affairs and External Linkages (OIL) conducted a pre-departure orientation for Geanna and her mother on August 4, 2026, to help prepare her for the exchange program.

From the East to Japan, UE continued to open doors for students to learn, connect, and grow beyond borders.
