The University of the East congratulates Mr. Jhon Rex D. Malones and Mr. Lorenzo L. Ortiz, both Senior High School-Grade 11 students of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Strand-Mathematics Unit of the UE Basic Education Department-Caloocan, for winning the Gold Medal in the Final Round of Senior Secondary Competition of the recent Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO)!

The competition, which took place online last April 27, 2024, saw numerous Mathematics enthusiast-student competitors from private and public schools of various countries—including the Philippines, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Taiwan, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia.

Mr. Malones and Mr. Ortiz are both Math competition veterans. Both were participants in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad (BIG BAY BEI) 2024 held last March 16 via the online site Eklavya and onsite in Macau, China. In that competition, Mr. Malones won 2nd Prize in the Senior Secondary Group, while Mr. Ortiz won 3rd Prize in the same category.

Mr. Malones also won the Bronze Medal in the Battle of the Golds at the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) 2023 held last January 6 at the Perpustakaan Pengajian Melayu, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Serving as Mr. Malones and Mr. Ortiz’s coaches for these competitions were the UE SHS Caloocan STEM-Math Unit Coordinator Royden R. Erenea and STEM Teacher Alvert Loie Baylon-Ramos.
