A Visual Communication student of the UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (CFAD) was awarded as the UE Artist of the Year for the recently concluded school year 2023-2024.
Angelo Miguel “Ulap” Chua, a fourth-year UE Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) major in Visual Communication student, earned the distinction last May 7 during the UE Caloocan Recognition Program for the year. Mr. Chua was one of 24 UE CFAD students recognized for their exceptional talent in local and international art competitions.
Ulap Chua is the current president of the UE CFAD’s Buklod Sining Organization, which was recently awarded Outstanding College Organization for Arts and Culture by the UNESCO Clubs of the Philippines. As a Malabon-based budding performance and image-maker, Mr. Chua’s practice of art, filmmaking, and photography has been immensely influenced by the performance medium due to his theater and performance art roots. He sees performance or social events as ephemeral in nature, like ghostly apparitions that are impermanent and expeditious. He aims to counter this ephemerality through his works, which strive to immortalize various narratives and cultures.
Mr. Chua had participated as the lone Filipino and Southeast Asian artist in the prestigious EDEN***** Studios in Berlin, Germany, from January 8 to 12, 2024, for the international workshop titled “Physicality in Acting” under the New International Performing Arts Institute (NIPAI). This marks the second international residency program for Mr. Chua, who is currently working on his capstone short film project, ‘Wala ng Bukas,’ as a writer and director.
Aside from this international accolade and recently acquired scholarship, Mr. Chua’s recent artistic endeavors include being selected as one of the 11 recipients of the New Face Photographer Award at the Ulsan International Environmental Photography Festival 2023 in South Korea, where he exhibited his striking series, ‘Ang Banyuhay ng Dalamhati.’ He also attended the two-week 27th BIFAN NAFF Fantastic Film School: Everything Everywhere All at Home Program in South Korea in 2023. Additionally, he was selected as one of the eight artists for the Tokyo Festival Farm-Asian Performing Arts Camp 2022 in Japan, where his project ‘ANIMOー応援ー’ was developed. The live performance-film hybrid recently premiered at the Film Development Council-Academedia screening.
Locally, he has made waves as the Editor and Director of Photography for the Cultural Center of the Philippines. This via Performatura’s Lam-Ang Indak at Hiraya ng Pagsinta and Super Kartero, a 2022 film-theater hybrid that premiered at the RYP PH Kolaboratoryo Festival. He also recently started a series of visual works titled ‘Visualized Biomechanics’ for the ‘Atip’ Balai Maria Exhibition in Intramuros. He has participated as a recognized performance artist at the annual International Solidarity in Performance Art Festival since 2019. His latest experimental film, ‘ROD,’ became one of six finalists in the experimental film category of the SinePiyu Film Festival, and it not only reached the finals but also won the Special Citation for the Experimental Film Award.
Mr. Chua is set to travel to Austria for an international art residency program this month, as he has been awarded a full scholarship for the NIPAI 2024 Laboratory and IUGTE Conference at Laubegg Castle, Austria, by ArtUniverse.org, an organization established to support creative people around the world who study and work in performing arts, theatre directing, and multi-disciplinary arts.
Congratulations, kudos and keep up the stellar work, Award-winning Warrior Artist!
